6 Body Language Gestures That Give Away A Liar

Lying is far too common in our society, and you can’t just rely on someone’s words to know they are authentic. Catching a liar is hard, however,  there are ways you can easily pick cues that give away a liar. It is simply achieved by noticing certain body language gestures of the person. Such methods are also used during interrogation by the cops. Here are certain techniques by which you can easily know you are being lied to:

#1. Micro –expression

There is a thing called micro-expression that appears on a person’s face for a fleeting moment that reveals his/her truth. If you carefully observe the expressions of a person when they are talking, and they show momentarily distress then, it's a sign they are hiding something. You can practice and train yourself to detect these expressions.

#2. Constant touching of nose

A person who is lying is going to be touching his nose or covering his mouth a lot more than someone who is speaking the truth. This happens due to the adrenaline rush that goes to the capillaries in the nose and causes them to itch. A person lying will also cover his mouth more out of psychological reasons, and his mouth will seem tense and lips pursed.

#3. Eye-movements

Shifty eyes can give away a lot more than the person intends to say. If you observe closely, you can make out if a person is lying just by observing their eye movement. If a person recollects details, their eyes move towards the left if they are left-handed. If a right handed person is making something up, they are most likely to look up and to the right. Similarly, if a left -handed person is making up stuff, they look up and to the left. The frequent movement of hands or fingers towards the eye also suggests that the person is trying to lie.

#4. Eye contact

Contrary to popular belief, a liar doesn’t always refrain from keeping eye contact. Rather someone who is remembering something will actually break eye contact and gaze at some other non-moving object to recall things he is talking off. Liars rather keep an eye contact in order to give a false impression that they are authentic and speaking the truth. This pretentious practice is a defensive attitude to show they are sincere.

#5. Tone modulation

It’s not just the eyes, but even the voice can give away a liar quite easily. If someone starts talking faster or slower, all of a sudden or has a high-pitched or quavering tone, then that can be an indication of deception. Also, if someone who talks normally starts to stammer or stutter is also trying to hide something.

#6. Excessive details

Exaggeration is a human tendency but too much detailing that is unnecessary or is not required can be a sign of lies being told.
