How long can you hold your breath? Maybe for a minute or two, at max. However, that is again followed by a short spell of rapid breathing, that somewhat makes up for it.
On the other hand, there are some human beings, mostly in the world of sports who can hold their breath for astonishingly longer periods of time. Some free divers, in particular, can hold their breath for more than ten minutes while swimming. Ten!
That brings us to the major question, how long can humans hold on to their breath? Let us try and find a closure to this pertinent question once, and for all.
Scientists believe that humans can comfortably hold on to their breath for about 90 seconds, without having to take rapid bursts of breath after that. In the case of infants, the number lowers down and varies anywhere between 30-45 seconds. Being able to breath-hold for any longer than that is a great sign of physical fitness and endurance, and it stems from the basic fact that a human who can live without taking breaths for longer intervals is challenging the basic institution of his survival instinct.
