7 Tips To Negotiate A Raise in Salary

Have you been killing it at work; outperforming every single one of your colleagues? So, a raise must be on its way, right? Well, not necessarily! Even though you may be consistently recognized for your accomplishments and work ethics, you most probably aren’t going to be handed over more cash in most likelihood cases.

Negotiating a raise at work is an art, which doesn’t come that easily. Thus, despite performing brilliantly at work, some people have to make compromises when it comes to the paycheck.

Before you begin to negotiate your raise with the organization, you must know that there is a right way which can get you the deserving salary and there is a wrong way which will make you look like a money-hungry employee.

Here are some tips that will help in getting the appraisal you long for.

#1. Have Patience

Do not expect a raise every single time you reach your goals; this could wear your boss out. Rather, wait for the decent period to pass, so you have consistent performance numbers to boast. The ideal would be to wait for a year from when you were recruited or last promoted.

#2. Ask for Feedback

Confidence is a great thing, but the willingness to accept criticism is also crucial. Request an honest assessment of your work. The least it will do is show your seriousness towards your role in the team to your boss. Willing to receive criticism and improve on it, is a quality not many possess!

#3. Make Case

Merely asking for a raise won’t do the job, you will have to persuade your boss why you deserve a raise. Highlight your accomplishments and how you have gone above and beyond your job description whenever the organization needed you to. It would be great if you can throw in some numbers; this would help your manager to escalate your case to the HR.

#4. Be Clear On What You Want

Be clear on the number you want before you approach your boss for the raise. It could be in dollars or percentage of your current salary. Consult your mentors and other people in the industry about how much they earned when they were in your position, and what others in comparable positions are making.

#5. Leave Your Personal Life Out Of It

Your boss doesn’t want to hear about how you need extra money to bear your increased rent, and nor should you bring it into the conversation. Your raise is going to be by your merit and what you bring to the table and nothing else.

#6. Talk About Future

Managers value loyalty, so it would be great to show your boss how much you have invested in the organization in terms of hard work and dedication. Explain your future plans and how you wish to continue contributing to the growth of the business. Being a proactive problem solver and volunteer for projects can go a long way.

#7. Be Ready For A NO

Don’t get discouraged if you don’t get the raise or promotion you asked for. Request a mid-term performance evaluation with defined goals and salary adjustment. Even if you do not get the raise, you can still negotiate a bonus, incentive plan or more vacation time.
