What is DLNA? How to Use DLNA?

Every wondered what is DLNA technology all about? How to use DLNA? And how DLNA works on TV? It might be an all entertainment promise but isn't the technology pretty obsolete considering the advancements of today?

The DLNA setup plays a significant role in the home entertainment network till date. And this what you really need to know - from DLNA definition to DLNA on TV and how it works.

DLNA Definition

Digital Living Network Alliance is essentially an organization that was established by Sony in the year 2003. DLNA specifies the standards within which devices are enabled to share the audio-visual stuff amongst each other. These multi-media instruments interact through a local (home) network. And the devices include gaming console, television, smartphone, home theater systems along with speakers and storage devices, etc. So, with the help of these DLNA enabled devices, the entire protocol lets you stream movies, music, games, and photos on your television without any wire based system.

How To Use DLNA?

First, you will be needing a DNLA enabled device to play the local media content (Television). Then you will require another device that stores this content (smart phone). The third item you will need is a router and lastly an ethernet cable/ powerline adapter/ wireless bridge. It basically brings together all your tech devices and acts as a home cloud. Wherever the media files are, you can easily get them to whatever device you want or are having. The DLNA hardware just needs a network. And any of the devices at your home that has the label of DLNA certification gets a green signal. This is like your very own universal plug and play console.

How DLNA Works On TV?

DLNA was a product made for its time. Connectivity back then was much different from how it is now. The locally stored media was capable of online streaming, and only a handful of AV formats are supported till now. The technology is offered by a majority of devices. In fact, you might be even using one of the DLNA devices. It was more suitable for the world where local media was the king. Modern technological devices are pretty much advanced. And the contemporary media consumption or streaming is entirely different from what DLNA was created for. However, this is how DLNA works on TV in case you want to access local files.

DLNA Setup: The Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) setup just makes use of your router for streaming the local media. Broadband network or broadband speed isn't a concern here. Using a wireless bridge or through an ethernet cable, connect your router and the television for streaming media around your home. Connect your phone to the home Wi-Fi, and it will show up as an available device on your television. Now you can simply start browsing any of the files present on your phone from your TV. Watch films, display picture gallery, play music, spend your night playing games and experience all the high-end audio through your DLNA enabled stereo systems.
