What Causes A Baby To Be Born With Extra Fingers?
The bible mentions that in the ancient times, giants used to wander the Earth with six fingers. It seems like the genes have been passed on to the humans. This recessive DNA code can become dominant at times, and therefore, there are multiple people who are born with fully functional sixth finger in both the hands or with six toes on both the feet.
This DNA code is not sabotaged due to any radiation; it’s just the dormant characteristics of this DNA that can lead to varied physical anomalies. Apart from a sixth finger, an elongated skull is another variation caused due to DNA codes.
A baby born with an extra (or sixth) finger or toe is said to be born with a congenital malformation (birth defect), which is quite common and is not a matter of concern. The sixth finger usually appears on either of the extreme sides or maybe in the middle. For example, an extra finger in the hand can grow beyond the little finger (referred to as ulnar hexadactyly) or beyond the thumb (referred to as radial hexadactyly) or between two normal fingers (referred to as intercalary hexadactyly).
Hexadactyly is innocent and completely harmless if it grows in isolation, and there were no other complications during the birth. Ulnar Hexadactyly is another undamaging sixth digit that too can be treated easily. Hexadactyly can get complicated if this congenital malformation affects the baby.

It might appear strange at the first look that a dominant trait can be rare, and a recessive trait can be common, but this happens a lot of times. Just like dwarfism is a dominant trait but isn’t as common as lactose intolerance which is found very often.
With the evolution of human kind, five fingers became a typical number; hence having six fingers is a rarity.
Because of it being a rarity, having six fingers became a subject of research for astrology.
Astrologers concluded that having a sixth finger brings enormous luck. It was one of the most popular beliefs of the superstitious folks that we all came across sometime or the other.
