Awesome places to visit near by Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad, the biggest city in Gujarat, is emerging as a popular tourist destination. Situated on the banks of the Sabarmati River, the city is attracting national and international tourists in large numbers. There are splendid monuments, great museums, and beautiful lakes to see in the city. The city also has numerous historical places to visit.

Though there are several interesting places in Ahmedabad, most important places to visit in the city are:

1. Sabarmati Ashram

Sabarmati Ashram which was also known as the 'Satyagraha Ashram' is a national monument. It is an important historical place as it is a witness to several historical events. The father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi lived there for around 12 years. Gandhi made the Ashram a headquarter from where he led the Dandi march on 12 March 1930.

The serene ashram complex is home to thousands of parakeets, sunbirds, bee-eaters and squirrels. It offers a peaceful shelter from the crowded city.

Places to visit in the Ashram

i) The Gandhi Smarak Sangrahalaya

The museum is the main attraction of the Ashram. Visitors can see Gandhiji's belongings in this museum- his writing desk, a yarn spun by Gandhiji, a khadi kurta and some of his hand-written letters.

It has five divisions and one library, one auditorium and two photo galleries. There are eight full-size color oil paintings and display on Mahatma Gandhi's life 'My life is My Message' and 'Gandhiji in Ahmedabad.'

The museum remains open for visitors from 8' O clock in the morning to 7' O clock in the evening, seven days a week, even on holidays. Entry is free. If you visit the Ashram at evening, then you can also enjoy a sound-and-light show.

2. Lothal

Lothal was one of the famous cities of the ancient Indus valley civilization. The city was excavated by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) between 13 February 1955 and 19 May 1960.

Lothal lies 85 KM away from Ahmedabad in Southwest. Not only archeologists, historians, and geologists take an interest in the ancient city, but leisure trippers also find the place very interesting.

Places to visit in Lothal

i) Dockyard in Lothal. It is one of the world's oldest harbors which reflects technical skills of people during the times of Indus valley civilization.

ii) Museums where you can see potteries and other things which were used by the Harappan people.

iii) Cemeteries that shed light on the life of people during the period of Dravidians, proto-Dravidians, and Mediterranean, etc.


3. Nal Sarovar Bird Sanctuary

If you are visiting Ahmedabad between November and February, then Nalsarovar Bird Sanctuary is a place you must visit. Over 200 species of birds migrate to this lake in this period from remote countries in search of food and warmth. During these four months, Nalsarovar Lake is one of the great attractions of Ahmedabad. You can see a wide variety of birds such as sandpipers, plovers, and stints.

The lake remains open from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm all the seven days in a week.


4. Teen Darwaza

Established in 141 AD by Sultan Ahmed Shah, Teen Darwaza is an epitome of Indo- Islamic architecture. It is one of the tallest and the oldest gateways of the Ahmedabad. It consists of beautiful arched gates.

Apart from enjoying the beauty of ancient art and culture, it is also a good shopping option. Here, you will get non-branded good quality products at a cheaper rate. At the same time, fill your appetite with delicious non-vegetarian food items.


5. Kankaria Lake

Kankaria Lake is the second largest lake in Ahmedabad. Situated in Eastern Ahmedabad, the lake offers numerous entertainment options to the visitors of all age groups. One can spend a whole day at Kakinara Lake Front and enjoy various adventure sports such as Tree walk, Desert Safari, Mini Golf, etc.
