What makes Bollywood movies tick? Believe it or not, music is a terrific box office magnet.

More often than not, if a music album is declared hit, the movie is a potential hit at the box office.

While most Bollywood films include musical numbers, all Bollywood films are not musicals. Movies produced recently have a fewer number of musicals as compared to older films. In older films, there would be up to 10 musical numbers and this number varies from 4 - 6 for films releasing in the recent times.

Here’s a compilation of some of the best musicals in Bollywood:

Aashiqui (1990) 

This album won over 13 awards that year. Aashiqui remains one of the best romantic albums Bollywood has witnessed in the nineties.

1942 A Love Story (1994) 

A period drama directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, this movie had melodious tunes thanks to the lyrics penned by Javed Akhtar. The emotive love expressed in tunes of this album is simple and makes you travel in time.

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995) 

Jatin - Lalit’s first album for Yash Raj Films, this album brought in a new wave of music in Indian cinema. This album ranks amongst the top 5 albums of Jatin-Lalit.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali proves that apart from being a great director, he has a great ear for music as well and has put all the right elements for this album. Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam remains a musical treasure to be savoured, over and over.

Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai (2000)

Devdas (2002)

Veer-Zaara (2004)

Rockstar (2011)

A. R. Rehman - the name delivers. The music was the biggest selling point of this film - a 14-song album that was a winning hit.

Aashiqui 2 (2013) 

The sequel of one of the greatest albums (Aashiqui) of Bollywood did come with certain expectations and this one did full justice to its premise. This album topped the charts for months and swept most awards in the music category that year.

Bajirao Mastani (2015)
