Do Pop Up Ads actually Work?

Pop-up ads are a form of online advertisements that befall everywhere over the Internet. Essentially, these are just popped out windows that are usually smaller than the user's background interface. This is the basic Pop-up ads meaning. The resemblance is just like any other browser window displaying three distinct options: Close, Maximize, and Minimize.

It contains several offers and services and is initiated through a user-generated action. There are several programs that can help block such ads for the user's convenience and work absolutely fine.

The Good Side - Are These Helpful?

Even though the users have an anti-ad attitude, they seem to still engage in them, according to Beth Hayden from Copyblogger. Such ads push the content on the forefront, and this is what makes them work. However, pop-up ads are less common now and marketers are resorting to other intriguing methods. It’s an old-school technique that requires you to wait for sometime before the ad ends along with hovering over the entire screen due to some action initiated by you. Yes, the video that pops out suddenly is also amongst the pop-up ad category. However, a well-planned and designed pop-up ad definitely brings up the interaction and engagement rate. And in case the relevancy of the ad is well thought off, it’s a sure shot plan.

The Ugly Side - Are These Annoying?

Pop-up ads are annoying for a majority of people. According to a study, such ads are usually closed even before they fully load. People use blocking extensions as they find irrelevant information. There are a plethora of such boxes that are impossible to get rid of. It develops mistrust from the end of the user and in no way persuade the visitor of the website.

The ads are quite annoying and are spread all over like an epidemic. It’s a way to flung the message right in front of the user's eyeballs. These are definitely interactive as the user needs to physically close the window. But that's not the correct way of engagement. Untargeted and unwanted ads also pose a future threat. Not even the ad blockers are at times able to differentiate between a user-generated action and potential pop-up ads virus. These ad blockers kill even the benign advertisements.

What can be done instead?

Opting for the hover/ light box style can be made use of instead of the technical pop-up. Provide a consistent experience rather than annoying. Keep testing if your new strategy works or not. Be prepared for the worst if you still want to stay stern about the decision of pop-up ads on your website. Let those be relevant, personalized and elegant. Pop-up ads are annoying, and they could be considered as the most hated tool from an advertiser’s kit, but they work. They work according to the strategies, relevance, type, and efforts you apply.
