Ugadi falls on March 18th this year. Ugadi is celebrated in Karnataka, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. It is also celebrated as Yugadi in Maharashtra.
Ugadi in Karnataka is celebrated with fervor. Ugadi is the traditional New year. On this day, there will be a change in the orbit of the moon. Panchanga Sravanam is performed in temples. It is believed that Hindu Lord Brahma created this world on Ugadi at Chaitra Suddha Padyami. Holige and bevu bella is a must for Ugadi.
Women decorate the entrance of the house with Rangoli and use mango leaves for tying the toran. Jaggery and neem leaves are distributed to all the family members. This symbolizes the good and bad. People take head bath early in the morning. They wear new clothes on this day.
Ugadi Pachadi is made using raw mango, jaggery, tamarind, chilli and neem. Salt is added. These six ingredients indicate six flavors of life. Six flavors of life are happiness, fear, sadness, bitterness, surprise and anger. We eat this just to remind ourselves that life is mixture of emotions and we should accept it. Panchangam is read out by the elder.
People visit their family and friends on Ugadi and take blessings from the elders. This is how the new year is begun.
