Shivaji Jayanti is celebrated every year on February 19 with much pomp and fervor in the entire state of Maharashtra.

Saffron-coloured flags, along with political posters and their flags, were put up across Mumbai. The occasion was celebrated on a grander scale at Lalbaug, Parel and Dadar, the Marathi heartland of the city.

Shivaji was born in Shivneri Fort in Junnar which is 100 km east of Mumbai. Shivaji was known to be a secular ruler and had a sizeable number of Muslims in his army. He wanted to overthrow the Mughal rule to create a Maratha empire and not a Hindu empire.

Shivaji Maharaj is known for his military and civil administration. He was named after the local Goddess Shivai to whom his mother Jijabai prayed for a son. Shivaji’s father Shahaji Bhonsle was the chief of the Bijapur kingdom. Shivaji Maharaj was the creator of the Maratha kingdom and he was instrumental in uniting the Maratha chiefs of Mayal, Konkan, and Desh regions.

He captured his first fort "Torna" (Tornagad) or "Prachandgad" when he was 16-years-old which was the first step towards building a Maratha empire. He was a strategic military commander and who was clever enough to establish a navy to protect the coastline when no other Indian ruler thought of about it. He is called the 'Father of Indian Navy'.
