#1.If I Should Have A Daughter ( Sarah Kay)
TED2011 witnessed two standing ovations when Sarah started off with "If I should have a daughter, instead of Mom, she's gonna call me Point B." It was a story of her metamorphosis from a teenager drenched in verse at the New York's Bowery Poetry Club to a teacher working towards connecting the kids through the medium of self-expression. Her project V.O.I.C.E has been responsible for these initiatives.
#2. Underwater Astonishments (David Gallo)
David Gallo gives voice to the words of ocean explorers Edith Widder and Roger Hanlon in the most enchanting way possible. He presents flabbergasting visuals of the sea creatures which included a camouflaged octopus, a color changing cuttlefish and a Times Square's lightened up with the neon colored fishes residing in the blackest depths of the ocean.
#3. The Danger Of A Single Story (Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie)
Novelist Chimamanda Adichie uses the TED stage to tell a story about how she found her authentic cultural voice with a warning that listening to just one such story will risk the chances of critical misunderstandings. She brings to light the lives and cultures of different people that are composed of many intersecting stories.
#4. The New Bionics That Let Us Run, Climb And Dance (Hugh Herr)
Hugh Herr lost both legs in a climbing accident 30 years ago. Being the head of the MIT Media Lab’s Biomechatronics group, he talks about his unbelievable technology in a talk that was both technical and personal. With the help of Adrianne Haslet-Davis, a ballroom dancer who lost her leg in the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing performed again on the TED stage.
#5. The Power Of Vulnerability (Brené Brown)
You are missing out on too much if you didn’t hear Brené Brown yet. She weaves together the funniest yet heart touching words together to present to the audience a deep insight into human connections. She talks about the love, the belongingness and the ability to empathize with one another. Her research sent her on a personal quest of self-awareness.
#6. We Need To Talk About An Injustice (Bryan Stevenson)
A human rights lawyer, Bryan Stevenson talks about the hard realities of the American judiciary. He reflects on the existing racial imbalances which have restricted the black male population of America in certain spheres of their lives. Witnessing such an open, unbiased and influential conversation is rare. It’s a must watch.
#7. My Architectural Philosophy? Bring The Community Into The Process (Alejandro Aravena)
Alejandro Aravena chose an unusual inspiration: the wisdom of favelas and slums to find solutions to his problems. Ten years ago he was asked to arrange accommodation for 100 families in Chile. Instead of taking the conventional route of building large buildings, he built super flexible half homes that could accommodate extended families. He took his audience through three of his projects via some stunning pictures and a chalk board.
