Open the TV and at least one channel will be showing a reality show. Reality shows are different from the other programs that are aired on TV. The salient feature of a reality show is that it is unscripted. They are supposed to screen actual events which may be funny or dramatic, as per the kind of audience the show targets. Another salient feature of the reality shows is that they have ordinary pedestrians rather than much sought after celebrities acting in them. Thus as the name goes, reality shows are supposed to portray the reality on television.
However, there is a bone of contention among critics regarding the truth that is portrayed in the reality shows. According to them many of these shows portray scripted and fabricated reality. There has been an ongoing debate regarding the relevance and utility of these reality shows. Those who are for the reality shows, favor them because unlike the soaps, these shows are spontaneous and not scripted. Also, some of the reality shows have a very good concept and often create a platform to showcase real talents. Those highlighting the disadvantages in reality shows say that seldom are they unscripted. Also, in most cases, these shows are very akin to the soaps in their melodrama. As these reality shows have high TRP, the TV channels of ten have to compromise on good shows to make time for these reality shows.
There are some reality shows that often create an adverse impact on the youngsters of the nation, and they tend to grow astray. Hence more than often, these reality shows are a source of negative influence on the youth of the nation. Hence before airing a reality show, the makers must ensure that the concept of the reality is unique and has relevance to the people who are watching them.
