The holy land of Vrindavan conjures up the images of Lord Krishna, which symbolizes eternal peace and spirituality.
Hindu devotees and pilgrims from different parts of the world visit the holy land of Vrindavan to seek blessings from almighty. Visited by millions of devotees every year, the popular Banke Bihari Temple was built in the year of 1864.The temple was discovered by an ardent devotee of Lord Krishna, Swami Haridas.
The huge temple houses the sacred image of Lord Krishna, and it is popularly named as Thakur Ji. Hindu devotees offer garlands and sweets to offer devotion to the idol daily. The famous temple hosts a number of festivals out of which Janmashtami is the most popular one.
The ancient history of the Banke Bihari Temple:
Vrindavan is a holy land and is also considered amongst the popular Hindu pilgrimage site.One of the oldest surviving temples of Vrindavan is the Banke Bihari Temple, built in the year of 1862. The image of Banke-Bihari was discovered by Swami Haridas, who himself belonged to Nimbarka sampradaya. The term Banke implies to "bend in three places, " and Bihari means "supreme enjoyer.” In the popular temple, the image of Lord Krishna stands in a bent position.
Swami Haridas was a disciple of great musical genius Tansen. When he was passing through the holy land of Varanasi, he felt exhausted and decided to take rest in a particular place.In his sleep, Lord Krishna appeared in his dreams and asked him to dig a particular place to find the idol of the supreme deity buried deep beneath the soil. As soon as Swami woke up, he immediately started digging the place as instructed by Lord Krishna. And to his surprise, he was able to discover the beautiful and elegant idol of Lord Krishna.
Swami Haridas then started worshipping the idol. The idol was later moved to the newly built the Banke Bihari Temple in Varanasi city's Mathura district.
