13 Things Wrong With 13 Reasons Why

A popular Netflix show based on a novel by Jay Asher, 13 Reasons Why is supposed to be dealing with the sensitive issues of suicide, bullying and sexual assault among the teens. However, things go awry when the supposedly issue based show showcases suicide in a glamorous manner.

For a show that is made for quite a gullible audience, here are 13 things that are wrong with the show 13 Reasons Why:-

#1. It Glorifies Suicide

13 Reasons Why presents suicide as the right thing to do when you face hardships in life. Besides presenting suicide as a cool thing to do, it also unconsciously familiarizes its audience with how to commit suicide.

#2.Unrealistic

To aggravate the problematic portrayal of suicide, the show somehow unrealistically portrays that you can still be around even after you die and watch what happened after you die.

#3. It Makes Revenge Look Cool

Well, apart from its glorification, the lead character’s suicide is supposed to have a punitive impact on everyone she blamed for her death.

#4. Target Audience

13 Reasons Why targets the teen populace, who are known to be the most impressionable community. It inspires them for all the wrong things and provides a wrong aspect of mental health.

#5. Misguides On How To Handle Challenges

Showing suicide as a viable option to get out of a miserable situation, the show completely misguides the audience on how to deal with the major life challenges.

#6. On Mental Health

The show provides no discussion on the issue of mental health. Even the high school seems to be incompetent when it comes to handling the suicide and providing crisis counseling.

#7. Parent Child Relationship

A show that is supposed to present an offbeat storyline, 13 Reasons Why adheres to the stereotypical idea of children in conflict with their parents.

#8.Portrayal Of Technology

For a show that revolves around technology and social media, 13 Reasons Why tends to demonize the technical world. Instead of helping the teenager on how to manage social media, it immediately puts it in the negative light.

#9. The Idea Of Loneliness

The show unconsciously gives the message that at the end of the day there will be no one to support us or have our back. Even our friends, family, and teacher will not be there for you at times you need help.

#10. Issue Of Bullying

The show fails to properly acknowledge the reasons behind bullying. For instance- in reality, most of the cases of bullying are based on the idea of race.

#11. Male Gaze

The show also tends to cling on to the regressive and age old concept of the male gaze. While the narrator of the show is a girl, Hannah Baker, the tapes recorded by her are shown as her male classmate goes through them.

#12. On Screen Rape

As a bold step, the show has portrayed the detailed rape scenes. However, the onscreen rape scenes on 13 Reasons Why also tend to sexualize the victims and make way for voyeurism.

#13. Blame Shifting

The show, instead of promoting the act of taking responsibility, makes it look okay to shift the blame on everyone else around you.
