3D printing technology

Future is the 3D printing revolution.

It is going to be the next industrial revolution in all probability. Just think, how amazing the world would be when almost everything could be printed. Almost all objects, even roads, vehicles, houses and multi-storey buildings.

The great usage

And the time has come. It is happening indeed. Now you can get your new dashboard for your car printed at your home. And yes, your toothbrush, spectacles, hangers, scissors, crockery, furniture and decorative items as well as jewellery! And this is not the complete list!

This has opened new doors in the field of organ transplant. Now they are printing the replacements for broken bones and cartilages and even skin printing is being developed where the 3D printer will simply print the skin on the wounded parts of the body.

The large scale, as well as the nanoscale 3D printing technology, is under rapid research and development phases and the future is really fantastic!

The dark aspect

The bad side is that even the guns are being printed and not only this but their blueprints are being made available on the internet and anyone can download the models to get printed. A real gun of high efficiency is thus distributed and there is hardly some way to stop this. And you can imagine what else could possibly be available on the net in addition to the models of guns! It could create a real chaos!

How it is done

First of all using some CAD (Computer Aided Design) package, a 3D model is prepared. On the internet, there are available some free applications for this work. At the same time, other paid applications also are available. In this work, 3D scanners, plain camera or photogrammetry software could be used.

A 3D model thus created needs to be corrected and fine tuned to be ready for getting printed. Once errors in the model are removed, it is printed. Once the print is taken, there could be needed some finishing work! Well after that the product is ready.

Since the late 1970s, several 3D printing processes have been tried and developed. Now many types of 3D printers are in use and they use different processes of depositing layers of the objects to get the objects finally ready and they use different materials for all that. Some of the processes are Extrusion Deposition, Binding of Granular Materials, Lamination, Photopolymerization, Powder Fed Directed Energy Deposition, Metal Wire Processes etc.

Summary

The 3D printing technology is going to be the next industrial revolution and yes, it would revolutionize they way we think and live! It is going to be a real challenge for the mankind to keep it within the ethical constraints!
