If you are a die-hard fan of Nawazzuddin Siddique, pull up your sock and prepare to grab the first tickets of theatre this weekend. The rustic film ‘Babumoshai Bandookbaaz’ starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui has released and is taking everyone by surprise. After being in the news for quite some time because of the 48 cuts suggested by the sensor board on this project, the movie has opened to the public. The film which deals with the life of a hitman who is crushed between his multiple rivals and his lover.
Here’s what the review says about the movie:
Scroll
The movie has many deftly written and directed scenes and enough cruelty to keep it ticking along, but its momentum slips ever so often, and its moral concern barely peeps through. There is always far too much going on in this patch of Uttar Pradesh badland for Babu to emerge as the last hero standing. Ghalib Asad Bhopali’s crackling dialogue is a constant in the thicket of twists, which result in several false endings.
Hindustan Times
Babumoshai Bandookbaaz has got the ingredients, but their proportions are not right. If you laugh at a Nawaz jibe, then you also sense the futility of useless conspiracies. Sometimes for absolutely no reason. Then there is a twist that’s as forced as Nawazuddin stroking his hair in every second scene.
NDTV
As capricious as its unfounded title, Kushan Nandy's rough-hewn hinterland noir Babumoshai Bandookbaaz is a roaring mess. It misfires on most counts. So, what was all the kerfuffle for? While this Babumoshai obviously has no affinity with Dr. Bhaskar Banerjee, the thriller, no matter how hard it pushes itself, is merely a country cousin of Bollywood's gangster sagas. Bijuria - a fictional police station area somewhere in Uttar Pradesh - is no Wasseypur. And its denizens are emaciated shadows of the trigger-happy, fast-talking thugs that peopled Anurag Kashyap's cult film.
Mid-day
A major issue with a film without any moral compass/center whatsoever is that it’s unlikely to generate much empathy among its audiences, whether for the situations on screen, or the characters concerned. Anybody can be shot at, and die, or not; and since all of them are bad guys anyway, who cares? That's a bummer.
