How to Find Range?

Do you know what ‘Range’ means in the subject math? Do you know how to calculate it? Do not worry if you don’t know! We will help you out in understanding it. It’s pretty simple.

In the subject Statistics, the range of a data set can be figured out by getting the difference between the largest and smallest values. What do you exactly have to do? You need to set the numbers in ascending order, i.e. from smallest to biggest and subtract the smallest number from the biggest number.

Now, look at the ways to find the range given below:

Step one: Arrange the plate of numbers in order from smallest to biggest:

Suppose that your data set has the following numbers, ( 7, 8, 65, 8, 4, 7). What do you have to do? You just have to arrange them in an order starting from smallest to biggest just to get a better understanding of numbers. It also becomes easier for us to find out the range. After the arrangement, the data set would look something like the following ( 4 , 7, 7, 8, 8 , 65 )

Step two: Identify the smallest and biggest numbers in the data set:

The second steps ask us to identify the smallest and biggest numbers given in the data set. The example which we have considered for our work has number 4 as the smallest digit and the biggest number is 65. These numbers can be conveniently located on either end of the set of data since you rearranged the numbers in an ascending order.

It would look like this:   4,  7, 7, 8, 8, 65

Step three: Subtract the smallest digit from the largest:

Once you’ve completed the above two steps. Next thing you are supposed to do is to subtract the smallest number that is 4 from the largest number that is 65. The result of the equation   65 – 4 is 61. Thus, the range comes out to be 61.

Step four: Write down your range procured from the data set:

Voila! So you have finally ascertained the range which comes out to be 61. You’re all done! Also, if you wish to find a range of a function, then you would need to follow a slightly more complex process. But, this is all is required to calculate the range of a data set comprising of numbers.
