How to Rock your First Day at your New Job?

The hardest part of acquiring a job is over when you clear the interview with flying colors. But another important chapter in your work life will be your first day. It holds a lot of meaning as all the colleagues, and your boss will be forming a judgment based on how you present yourself on the first day. It is an opportunity for you to create a positive image for yourself in the minds of everybody at the office. So, it is completely normal to be nervous.

The people will be forming perceptions about you based on the first impressions. The first impression often stays in the mind of people for a long time. That is indeed a good news for the people who manage to make a good first impression. Since it means a lot, we are here to help you with it with some useful advice. Let us have a look at some tips to rock the first day at new job.

How To Rock The First Day At New Job?

#1. Know About The Company

You should know the background of the company you are going to work in. This does not only apply only when you are taking the interview but also after that. You should do a little research about the company so you can have a good conversation with your boss about it. Read about the goals and products of the company before your first day at new job. You will not be expected to do this but being one step ahead is going to play in your favor. While you are in office, you could also try to pick up information on how things work on the inside.

#2. Come A Little Early

People will usually advise you to be punctual to work during the first few days. But we will ask you to go earlier than the expected time. Arriving before your colleagues do is going to help you in making a good rapport with them. In order to do so be familiar with the route to the office and ascertain the time you will take to reach there considering the traffic as well. Also, do not be the first one to step out of office after work hours. Wait for others to leave. Find out if someone else goes by the same route as you and see if they would be okay if you accompany them. You will get an opportunity to form a good bond with them on the way.

#3. Dress Smartly

If you want to make a good first impression on your first day, make sure that you are dressed appropriately. If you have been to the office before, you would be aware of the dress code. Follow that. Put on your best shirt, tie, and pants if they need you to be in formals. But also make sure that your clothes are not uncomfortable or you won't be able to perform so well on your first day.

#4. Have A Smile On Your Face

Do not keep giggling by yourself as that would make you look like a fool. Have a genuine little smile which shows that you love the new work environment. Also, you will appear as a friendly person. People will not hesitate to come to you and make introductions. Just tell yourself to relax as you made it to the job that you were waiting for a long time.

#5. Be Confident

Being nervous is a natural human instinct whenever you face new surroundings. But appearing nervous on your first day will make you look like less experienced than you are. So try to fake confidence by being friendly to people. Do not let it show on your face that you are scared. Just respond well to the tasks you are given. If you are able to cope up with the work pressure, you can try to suggest some good ideas about work to your boss as well to make a good impression.

#6. Introduce Yourself

Most probably your senior will introduce you to the rest of the people in the office. But if you come across someone in the cafeteria you have not already met, do not hesitate to make introductions. Be acquainted with people even from other departments. It might just help you in your work performance. Try to remember the names of the people as much as you can as it would be impressive to address people with their name the next time you have to talk to them.

#7. Avoid Complaining

Be happy with what you get in your new office. Do not make the mistake of walking up to your boss and discuss the things that you do not like about the place. Resist complaining about the salary or timing. You must have already considered these factors before taking up the job. So why complain about it again right on the first day. Instead, wait for sometime and show a sparkling performance. Those ways you will be justified to demand something in return for good work.

#8. Don't Get Involved In Gossips

It is a definite no to get involved in office gossips and even worse to pass your judgments as well in it. It is going to leave a negative impression on your colleagues. Do not show interest in knowing the people you should avoid in office. It is useless to be a part of a conversation about someone's secret affair. Do not talk behind people's back. If you want to talk to people, have healthy conversations with them openly.

#9. Don't Bad Mouth Your Previous Job

You should never talk about your old job as something unpleasant you had to bear especially in front of your boss. They will automatically consider you as a complaining person. It might feel good to discuss how your previous boss was a selfish old wank. But that is not a good idea to have that conversation on your first day. Try to show yourself as a positive person instead of the opposite.

#10. Take Help

It is okay to ask your senior to help you around with how things work in the office. While you are striving to make a good impression, you should not do things before knowing the way they are done in the new office. There is a chance you will ending up screwing things, if you do not know the correct method. Asking questions is better than making mistakes.

#11. Socialize With Co-Workers

Start to get to know people by having small-talk with everybody you see. Join any sports clubs or book clubs that are formed by your fellow employees. You will be able to know your colleagues outside of work environment too. Also, do not spend lunchtime munching your tiffin all by yourself at your desk. Try to join a group and share food with them. You will be knowing people on a more personal level that ways. Try to come up with good topics to discuss when conversation dries up.

#12. Stop Being Know-It-All

It is possible that you already know the work that you are supposed to do at the office. But be a good listener when you are being told how it is done and what not to do. Do not interrupt the person to tell them that you already know these things. They might have a different way of doing it. So it is better to listen to the whole thing first and if you want, you can tell them in the end that you are somewhat familiar with the procedure. Nobody likes a person who shows-off unnecessarily. So be humble even when sharing your qualities and you will make a good impression on the first day at the new job.

#13. Apologize For Any Mistake

You should try to adhere to the policies and procedures that you are told about. You should avoid letting anything go wrong. But you are human and making a mistake is okay as it is still your first day. You do not know the routine of the things yet. So, walk up to your senior and accept the mistake that you have made as soon as possible. The earlier you tell, the chances are they will be able to make things right. Apologize for your mistake and make sure they understand that it was not intentional.

#14. Thank The People Who Helped You

You might have gone to some people to ask how to do a certain task and take their help with it. In order to make them feel good about helping you with work, you can send a thank you note by text or email at the end of the day. Appreciate their effort to help you inspite of their busy schedule. They will be open to helping you around the next day as well that ways, you will make a good impression.

The first day is very important if you want to make a good place for yourself in the new company. People will be judging you, so you have to make sure that you are at your best performance to impress the watching eyes. You have cleared the interview, the job is yours. But will you be able to score that promotion as well? That depends on how you portray yourself on your first day. I have changed quite a few jobs over the course of my life. The one thing that never changed was the judgements of the people forming about you. They will look calm and friendly around you. But secretly they will be talking in chats how you are doing. Each employee has an opinion about you that they do not hesitate to gossip about with others. I know this because when I become part of that group, I do the same. I feel no shame in admitting that this is the ongoing tradition at every company. We cannot blame the employees for having some gossips between all the boring work schedule.
It is not only the employees that you have to impress, you most importantly have to get in the good books of your immediate boss. You will be working under their supervision for the rest of your time with the company unless you are promoted. So if you want them to send a good performance review for you to the management, you should get on to the work right from the first day. It is a chance for you to think that you are the best person in the team maybe. Try to maintain a friendly relation with them and thank them for any help that you take from them throughout the day.
I always make sure to make an impression with my clothes. It is very simple as you have to make a one-time investment in it and it will go a long way for you to look smart in your clothes. Buy some good clothes and shoes for yourself so that you look serious about your profession. It will be impressive. I am telling this from the experience. Often I was the only one in the interview who decided to wear a tie as well with my shirt. But guess what, that made me stand out in the crowd of so many people. I used to become the only one to get through the interview. It is simple to get this done even on your first day. No matter how the people dress, make sure you are at your best. Be a gentleman/lady that you have ever been. You will feel good in yourself and so will others. So that was my little advice about how you can have a rocking first day at your new job. Hope it helps the readers of this page.
