Critics Review

After 300 years, the British Raj was coming to an end. For six months in 1947, Lord Mountbatten, great grandson of Queen Victoria, assumed the post of the last Viceroy, charged with handing India back to its people. Partition: 1947 may not be the best partition drama Indian cinema, but it is certainly a well-made, well-executed movie. movie tells the true story of the final months of British rule in India.

Partition: 1947

Internationally released as 'Viceroy's House', Partition: 1947 is a grim reminder of the freedom struggle and the night of the partition that divided a country into two parts India and Pakistan. Directed by Gurinder Chadha and starring Huma Qureshi, Manish Dayal, Om Puri and Hugh Bonneville, the movie is a must watch for those who enjoy browsing through the history.

But before you put this on your bucket list for the weekend, read the reviews!

Economic Times

The plot is straightforward as it reveals the intense and politically complex series of events that took place over a period of weeks. The harrowing details and unbelievable twists tactfully balance the emotional quotient without tilting the scales or losing key points of the chronicle.  Overall, despite its shortcomings, "Partition: 1947" leaves a mark as an engrossing and imposing film.

Hindustan Times

In 106 minutes, Gurinder Chadha ably paints the anxiety and painful relocation of millions on the both sides of the border. Her handling or rather handing out a clean chit to England’s last Viceroy to India seems over-simplification of the historic episode though.

KoiMoi

The movie on paper is a winner. It’s something you wish should offer more. It’ll keep you intrigued till the end but it will not convince you entirely about the events happening. If only the makers would’ve concentrated more on the building up of facts, the story could’ve been different. The way Gurinder has presented the Viceroy’s House is commendable. Not for a single moment you feel it’s India from 1947.

Bollywood Life

Partition: 1947 may not be the best partition drama Indian cinema has seen, but it is certainly a well-made, well-acted, thought provoking movie that needs to be watched. It may be based on a depressing event that happened 70 years ago, but repercussions of the same still affect us to this date. Quite recommended!
