What do Kidney Stones Look like?

Kidney stones are masses made up of salt and mineral. They form inside the kidneys and travel down the urinary tract. Kidney stones vary in size from just a dot to as large as a tennis ball. The signs and symptoms of kidney stones include spots of blood in the urine, constant pain in the abdomen or groin region.

Kidneys have the function of regulating levels of fluid, minerals and salts in your body. When this balance is not maintained, kidney stones may form. Usually, kidney stones affect one kidney and do not cause kidney failure. However, if there is only one kidney, these stones can cause kidney failure.

Types Of Kidney Stones

Kidney stones are formed from various substances. There are five types of kidney stones.

#1. Calcium Oxalate Stones: These are the most common type of kidney stones. When the urine has a low pH, kidney stones tend to form. They are formed from calcium and oxalate, but sometimes they can be formed from calcium and phosphate. A calcium oxalate kidney stone looks like this:

#2. Uric Acid Stones: These stones form when the urine is acidic. People who have a diet rich in animal fats like fish and meats have chances of developing these kidney stones. Uric acid kidney stones look like this:

#3. Struvite Stones: If there is an infection in the kidneys, the likelihood of developing struvite stones increases. A struvite kidney stone looks like this:

#4. Cystine Stones: A rare genetic disorder in which cystine leaks from the kidneys and into the urine results in the formation of cystine stones. A cystine kidney stone looks like this:

Treatments For Kidney Stones 

There are many ways through which you can treat kidney stones. If you want to prevent the formation of kidney stones in the first place, the basic rule is drinking plenty of water. Apart from this, you can also try these:

#1. Apple Cider Vinegar: Apple cider vinegar helps in dissolving kidney stones. It has an alkali property that dissolves small kidney stones with ease.

#2. Pomegranate Juice: Pomegranate juice has astringent qualities. It helps in the treatment of kidney stones.

#3. Lemon Juice And Olive Oil: Combining lemon juice and olive oil helps in getting rid of gallbladder stones, but it can also be used in dissolving kidney stones. It also prevents further growth of stones.

#4. Kidney Beans: Kidney beans are rich in magnesium. It helps in reducing the symptoms that are associated with kidney stones.
