What Exactly Does ‘For Whom The Bell Tolls’ Mean?

It is pointed out by scholars that, Donne must be referring to the morality of people, by using this phrase. This means, every time we hear the funeral bell, it is a reminder that each day we are nearing death. Thus, whatever time we have better make good use of it. If you take a mystical look at it, Donne is stating the fact that we all come from the same source. Due to this when anyone dies, there is a part of them left in us. Also, when someone dies, we lose something; a part of us also dies. We all die a little. The other aspect of this is, there is a part of the living in the dead, linking it to the concept of life after death.

The detailed analysis is directly linked to the beliefs according to the Catholic tradition, that all human beings are connected to Christ, we all come from the same source. Therefore, we all are same in the eye Christ. Thus, everyone is connected to each other and there is nothing that separates us. As a result of this anything that affects one also affects all the rest of the humanity. Anything that affects an individual has its impact on the entire humanity at large.
