What does LOL mean?

We see ourselves using the term ‘LOL’ over and again in online texting and even on social media websites sometimes. But, do you know what does LOL stands for and how to use it? Let’s find out!

LOL is known as ‘Laugh Out Loud.' The much-used acronym came out during the year 1980, and by the year 1993, it was used in the electronic communication. Over the last few years, the term ‘LOL’ has lost its importance. Now, if somebody tries using it, we don’t expect the other person to be laughing out loud. It indicates a little smile.

How To Use ‘LOL’

Did you know that term can be used as an interjection and a verb?

Many people like using the term in all caps and many don’t. If you tend to use “LOL” in caps in electronic communication, it shows as if you are laughing loud. But, it is not considered a word to use in formal communication and also remember there are no particular rules on how to capitalize them in informal communication.

Also, the term is used in talking although saying ‘LOL’ arises a contradictory situation where you say that you are laughing out loud rather than iterating laughing out loud.

Examples:
#1. That was just too amazing! LOL!
#2. I LOL’ED so badly when he fell on the floor.
#3. I LOL every time you pronounce the term ‘mouse.'

How to Capitalize and Punctuate Web and Texting Abbreviations:

#1. Capitalization Is Not A Concern: When you are using abbreviations in text messages, you can use either upper or lower case but the meaning remains the same. Though, please prevent yourself from using the entire sentence in upper case as it hurts the eyes and seems as if you are shouting online.

#2. Proper Punctuation Is Not Concerning: Proper punctuation isn't concerning with many text messages abbreviations. Example, the abbreviation for ‘to bright, can’t see’ would be ‘TB; CS’ OR ‘TBCS’.'With or without punctuations, both are acceptable formats.

#3.  Avoid Using Periods Between Your Letters Which Are Jargon: This would definitely beat the aim of increasing typing. Example; LMAO would never be spelled as L.M.A.O and BTW would never be spelled as B.T.W.

A ‘Must-Know’ Etiquette:

If you know who your audience is and whether the context if formal or informal, then using jargon in texting is good. It shows the good judgment of a person as well.
