Are Fruits & Vegetables Living Things?

The concept of plants being living organisms is fascinating and have been stated in our school books too. Other than the books, quantum physics too propagates that all the three-dimensional objects (or matter) are living; be it the stones, the water or even our mobile screens. Every object has some energy which keeps on vibrating at different rates.

But do you think that vegetables feel the pain when they are chopped? Let’s find out.

Are Vegetable Living Or Non Living?

Vegetables or the plants that bore them are living things.

And now as far as plants, vegetables, fruits, and algae are concerned, they have varying degrees of intelligence so to live, develop and evolve. They have a built-in defense mechanism because of which they release oxygen in exchange of carbon dioxide. If it weren’t for this, plants and animals (including humans) wouldn’t be around each other.

The designing of plants as living things is done in a manner that they benefit themselves as well as other living organisms.

Do Vegetables Feel Pain?

Unlike animals, vegetables or plants do not feel pain while they are uprooted or chopped into some delicious gravy. There are three main reasons for the same:

#1. In scientific terms, plants are not designed in a manner to feel the pain. They do not have any emotional inclination towards dying or being caused any harm. In contrast to animals, plants do not have a nervous system to inform them about body pains or any harmful sensations.

#2. In philosophical terms, nature cannot let someone feel the pain without having the strength to fight against it. Plants do not feel the pain, and therefore, have no capacity to fight it back.

#3. In practical terms, one will never witness a potato or a bell pepper running away from the chopping board because it is scared to die. Kitchens are nothing like the slaughter house, which is filled with the pleading voices of the innocent animals that are killed there every second.

Killing Plants vs. Killing Animals

While most vegans claim that they do not eat meat because it involves killing the animals, but if plants too are alive like animals, how can killling them be justified?

#1. Most fruits are gathered from trees in an absolutely non-violent manner. Similarly, vegetables too are picked from their plants, after which the plant keeps continuing its life-cycle and generates new fruits and vegetables, now and then. On the contrary, to claim meat, one needs to kill the animals, which are living things just like humans. It involves a lot of violence and bloodshed.

#2. In the absence of a nervous system, plants do not feel the pain when being uprooted or chopped, whereas animals can feel it. When an animal is about to be slaughtered, it gets really nervous and afraid due to which the body releases various enzymes in his blood stream. Do you think it’ll be healthy to consume those chemicals and enzymes?

#3. Vegetables and fruits are easy to digest, but meat isn’t. Human bodies are not designed to digest hard meat. Therefore we need to cook them, and add spices to them according to our palates. Foods like meat take longer to digest, which can lead to its decomposition hence causing diseases.
