Traditional medicines have been in use since time immemorial. Years back in ancient times when our ancestors just ate, drank and slept, they used traditional medicines to cure their ailments. These traditional medicines are still used as home remedies. A very simple such medicine is the basil leaf and its juice that is very effective for a common cough and cold when taken with honey. I was advised by one traditional medicine practitioner to chew some basil leaves early in the morning in empty stomach to cure sleep apnea from which I suffer. I did take his advice and am much better now.
Mint leaves taken at regular intervals keeps stomach ailments at bay and is also good for our digestive system. That's why I have planted them in my kitchen garden and use them often to prepare sauces that can be taken with sandwiches and pancakes. My garden has a whole lot of plants and trees like guava, mango, pomegranate, curry leaves, hibiscus(shoe flower) whose leaves and fruit extracts can be used as traditional medicines.
Leaves of the guava can be applied as a paste to arrest hair fall. The soft new leaves can be chewed to cure an upset stomach. A drink (Aam Panna) prepared from the pulp of roasted raw mango keeps you cool during summer. Pomegranate juice restores iron deficiency in our body as well as a chronic digestive problem like dysentery. Curry leaves when used for seasoning acts as an appetizer and also gives you a long flowing hair lock when massaged mixed with coconut oil.
Apart from these plant or herbal medicine, a teaspoonful of clarified butter keeps our brain active. Ancient practitioners prescribed tiger's oil(burnt tiger's fat) as a massage for rheumatism and other ailments related to bones. Some boneless fishes are taken to cure anemia.
Traditional medicine, when taken under the advice of a practitioner, are beneficial. However, animal products when taken from endangered animals like the tiger can be treated as a disadvantage.
