Bagel vs. Doughnuts: What's the Difference?

Does your nose smell a freshly fried doughnut or a just out of the oven bagel? We say, shut your nose for a while. Bagels and doughnuts may be a treat for your palate, but they are very unhealthy for your body.

Doughnuts are deep fried dough products that are meant to satisfy your sweet tooth. They can be light as bread and heavy as a cake. A jelly or cream filling with extra frosting or glaze just add on to the calorie count.

Bagels, on the other hand, are made from yeasted wheat dough. They are chewy, moist and heavily doughy from the inside. They may not be deep fried, but are still high in calories.

So are doughnuts and bagels the same? Let’s try to find it out.

Are Doughnut And Bagels The Same?

Both doughnuts and bagels are becoming a common breakfast item in India as well. A doughnut is a fried sweet confectionery which is loved alike by old and young, whereas bagels can be categorized as fancy bread.

Doughnuts and bagels are similar in terms of being unhealthy breakfast meals. Both of them contain high amounts of carbohydrates and calories. While both are alike in terms of calorie content, bagels also have a high content of sodium; so much so that one bagel is enough to fulfill your day’s sodium requirements.

Doughnuts are deep fried and have an abundance of saturated fat. For all you doughnut lovers, 65% of the total fat contained in a doughnut is ‘saturated fat’ which is extremely unhealthy for your body. To top it all, they also contain Trans fat which is considered to be the worst type of fat.

Difference Between Bagel And Donut

However cute, tasty and soft they might be, doughnuts will still be a fattening ring, that majority of the population consumes as a breakfast meal. The sweet treat is extremely unhealthy because of the tons of sugar that it contains.

On the other hand, bagels are popular as the traditional breakfast meal, but does that it make it healthy? We doubt that. Bagels are considered a healthier option only for the fact that they are not deep fried like our sweet-sweet doughnuts. They too are loaded with calories.
