Broken sleep as bad as not sleeping at all.

Do you wake up at 2 or 4. am?

Night after night interrupted sleep is dangerous. Interrupted sleep will make you depressed and may cause fatigue.Those who get sleep less than six hours in the night may be more prone to cardiac arrest, tumors, diabetes and obesity. 

They may also lapse in attention and more prone to accidents. Sleep-starved people are more irritable. Your ability to think clearly get affected by the lack of sleep. So there will be more arguments with your spouse or co-workers.

Sleep deprivation will have the same effect as illness. If you keep on waking up repeatedly every night, it is as bad as not sleeping at all and may cause serious health problems. Regular sleep is necessary.   It increases our immunity and memory. We should get eight hours of solid sleep every night.

Stage 1 of sleep, we are preparing to drift.

Stage 2 our brain activity becomes rapid. Our heart beat rate and body temperature slow down.

Stage 3 deep, slow brain wave emerges.

Stage 4 is a deep, sleep stage.

Stage 5 we start dreaming.

Our body repair and regenerate in the deep sleep phase. This should not be interrupted.

Here are some tips to prevent interrupted sleep:

- Cut intake of caffeine.
- Avoid late night meals.
- Try not to nap during the day.
- Get more sunlight and exercise daily.
- Quit alcohol.
- Take a hot bath before bedtime.
- Do not look at electronic gadgets before going to bed. Keep electronic gadgets away from you. They will be emitting radiations. It may cause trouble to fall in sleep.
- Keep your days bright with sunshine and nights, dark. Switch off all the lights. Keep your room dark and calm, while sleeping. It regulates melatonin production in your body. Try wearing an eye mask. Salt lamps can be used.
- Keep your pets away from the bedroom.
- Speak with your health care provider
