Being in a prison is a horrible experience. You get no air of freedom, no access to independence. In one word, if you want to describe the stay in prison, it simply is 'horrifying'. In the initial days, a prisoner goes through a shocking state of mind. Denials and repulsion become severe.
There exists an intense fear and a state of uncertainty everywhere. The fear of coping and adjusting with the existing prisoners and the ghastly ambience becomes haunting for the prisoners, especially during the first few days.
It is a dreadful experience altogether to be in prison. The prisoners find their desires and dreams getting flown away like rivers. You get no other option than to wait helplessly. Hopelessness lies everywhere. Many relationships die and get eroded. And, you have no other choice than to let them go.
It's such a pathetic situation. Your feelings get no importance. You get no priority absolutely. Things change completely. And, you only get to watch it feebly behind the bars. Such a dreadful, horrendous situation it is to be in prison!
Many prisoners fail to accept this and cope with this. They give up and try to end their lives. This stage is not only horrible but extremely wretched, which can never be expressed in words.
