How to Leave Past Behind & Move On with Life?

All that we can do is in the now, time that is gone once will not come back, nor will we be able to do all those things that we are getting the opportunity to do at this moment. Most of us tend to have so many wishes and dreams for the future, these seem promising and often appear to be better than what we are experiencing in the present. It is true that the future requires us to plan certain things beforehand and make sure working towards making things better in the future. But, that is not to be done at the cost of sabotaging the present moment and opportunities.

Similarly, the past also occupies a large amount of our thoughts and is the topic of our attention. One essential thing to keep in mind when we are talking about giving attention to the past is the fact that we have a huge amount of emotional attachment to the past. The future is something we wish to experience, most of us are not able to exactly feel what it is going to be like when things actually take place. The thing with the past is that we have already experienced it and we have memories attached to it, we have a lot of emotional attachment caused by the kind of experiences that were once a part of our life. This is the reason it is even more difficult to make sure we do not give too much attention to the past. Even when we are not making an effort to remember things, there can be certain things that can easily stir the feelings attached to the past experiences.  


What we need to understand is the fact that we all have to deal with those things that did not work out in the past and let go of all those things that turned so incredible that you wished they never came to an end. We have to let go of somethings and moments that can never last forever and we have to make sure we make peace with the memories of those things that did not work out. It is very important to make sure that we all have the ability to get over what has already taken place and make sure we make the best of the present moment and create some incredible memories for the future. 

If you have been hanging onto the past and have not been able to move on in life, if your inability to get over your past has been hampering your present activities, here are some of the ways in which you can get over your past and move on in your life.

#1. Make Peace With What Happened 

The first step in order to get over the past is to make sure that you make peace with all the things that took place. Making peace in order to get over the past can be of two kinds, one is making peace with the negative things that took place in the past. There are things that do not work out in our life, and there are those that leave a bitter feeling within us. It is essential for us to get rid of the regret and the lack of satisfaction that we attach to these events. This can be done by making peace with them and realizing the fact that there was absolutely nothing that is going to change if you keep holding on to the sour feeling that these events cause.  

The other thing that you will need to make peace with is the fact that not all good moments or things can last in life for long. There are times when we tend to enjoy life to the fullest and rarely wish such moments to leave our life. But, things will have to change. This, it is very essential to make with the fact that some things in life have come to an end and to make the most of the memories we have been able to create.

Holding to both of these past events can prove to be very negative for an individual, as it cripples them in the present moment. It makes it impossible to make the best of all the good that they are experiencing in the now. It makes it hard for them to be strong and face the challenges in the present moment. 


#2. Acknowledge The Lessons The Past Teaches You  

It is very crucial to understand the fact that nothing is a waste, all the difficult situations that you have faced in the past are the ones that taught you a lot of crucial life lessons that will be important for living a better life in the future. It is very important to keep in mind the fact that unless we make mistakes and some things go wrong in life we will not really be able to make the correct choices at many times in our life.  

We need to learn these life lessons in order to make sure that we grow as individuals. We cannot keep being the same person and living the same kind of life forever. This is the reason why various different kinds of things happen in our life. We need to take the lesson from all the experiences of the past and use them to cultivate a better present. After we have made the best use of the lesson, we need to make sure we let go of the past and move on to creating a beautiful future.  

#3. Take Professional Help 

Although it is essential to let go of the past and make sure we move on in our life, some of the experiences in our life are such that it becomes absolutely impossible for us to take charge of our thoughts and get rid of all the emotions attached to the past. Sometimes such traumatic events take place in our life that we cannot deal with the consequences of such events, they can prove to be hugely impactful and leave us an emotional wreck.

In such cases, it is important to take the suggestion and advice of professional experts who will be able to figure out the best treatments and the methods that we will need to use in order to make sure we can let go of the memories of the trauma that we have experienced. It is very essential to make sure that you get a proper treatment in case it is bothering your ability to live freely and you are not able to detach yourself from the negative feelings of the past events.  

It is important to understand the fact that in some cases we cannot find the solution to the problem our self and at the same time it is not possible for us to make sure that we heal all the negativity of the past all on our own. We need to understand the fact that there is professional help available for all those issues that we are not able to solve on our own. That’s why it is wise to seek professional help when you cannot handle things on your own and not let the problem persist. 


#4. Keep A Journal  

It is always very helpful for us to keep track of the kind of thoughts we are having. What is very essential is to make sure we continue to maintain positive thoughts, and we do not go back to thinking about the negative things that took place in the past before. In such cases, often our thoughts tend to slip back to the memories of the past. When such things happen, journaling is a very good idea. This will help you in two ways. Firstly, it will make it possible for you to keep track of the thoughts you are choosing to think deliberately. When you go through this journal later, and you find yourself following a negative thought pattern, you can keep that in mind and make the required changes.  

The other thing that you can do is to make sure you vent out all the negativity by writing down all the bitterness and the regrets you may be holding on to. This will make it easy for you to move on in life and look at the best things in your life at this point in time. Often, we cannot find an appropriate outlet for all those things that we tend to store in our mind and all the pent-up emotions within us. Journaling can be a really good way to get rid of all these emotions and feel baggage free in the now.

It is very essential to leave the past behind and move on in life, it is very crucial to understand
the importance of living in the now and making sure that you do not waste the great
opportunities that you are getting to live in the now. What I have realized is the fact that it is
impossible to make sure that each thing in our life works out flawlessly and we have a very
comfortable life at all times. But, that does not mean we remain stuck in the past evaluating the
negative things that happened to us. What will happen and how certain things will pan out in
our life is not in our hand and it is not for us to decide how they will turn out to be. At the same
time it is very important to make sure that we all have the capacity to move on in life and be
able to make peace with all that took place in the past and make the best of what is going on in
the now.
What I have learned from my life is the idea that it is very essential to make sure you have the
ability to detach from the outcome that take place in your life. If you can do that you will no
more be stuck in the past and not keep analyzing what happen in the past. What is essential to
keep in mind is the fact that we all need to be able to live to the fullest in the present moment
and to make sure that what took place in the past is not hampering our today. It is no point
wasting what we have in the now because of all those things that did not work out in the past.
