The term ‘Underachiever’ means that a person achieves fewer results in return of what his potential is actually worth. This can be either due to the lack of opportunity, lack of resources, procrastination, laziness, etc. In order to stop being an underachiever, you need to start by implementing baby steps in your life, proceeding to achieve something bigger in life. Life is short, and often people do not realize it is passing by. One moment you are 20 and trying to find yourself, and the other moment you are 30 and still figuring the answer to the same question. All the years spent fiddling and discovering your abilities and worth will eventually come to no use if you do not plan and take actual steps to move ahead with it!
Procrastination and laziness, two sides of the same coin, are the mankind’s greatest enemy. High school and college are the prime time for a person to discover his abilities and interests. After college, a person is considered ready to face the world on his own terms and expected to become financially independent. But does this plan always go accordingly? Sometimes it takes person years to stand on his own feet and become financially independent. If you are 30 and still living under your parents' roof, you can consider yourself a victim of underachieving! Another way by which people tend to not pay heed to their career or goals in life is because of their ignorant attitude. They often made their classmates do their homework for them, was never passionate about anything in their lives and always found out an easier way to get away with things in life. Sometimes people have such an ignorant and callous attitude towards everything in their life, that they will leave to do the dishes for the future instead of choosing it to do right after dinner without realizing about the extra effort they will have to undergo!
Until you think about what you want to do in life, set clear goals and work towards it, you can reach nowhere. So if you are young and reading this and still do not have any goals, make sure you give it a thought. Life races at a fast pace and even before you know, you are an adult with responsibilities. Pursue your dreams and work hard to achieve your goals before you become the center of jokes at family gatherings. Have a view at your life and realize the things you have achieved, the ones in the process of attaining and planning to achieve. This way, you will not only have clarity of thought on what your goals are, but will also show where you stand. Realizing for yourself as to how deep into water are you is essential, as that way, you can start a new life consisting of new goals and a different, positive view of life!
#1. Have A Look At Your Life
Or where you currently stand in your life. Did you ever plan to stand where you are standing at this age or did you never even gave this, or where your life is going, a thought? Do you have a plan for the next five years? Do you have a plan for the next 30 years? Have a look at your life, grab a piece of paper and pen and jot down the things you are passionate about and start collecting information on how to achieve those goals. Set some goals for yourself, so you don’t have the opportunity to sit idle and while away the time.

#2. Start Taking Baby Steps
If you have decided to pursue something and are positive about its effect on your life, career, and future, then start by taking baby steps into achieving your goal. If you always had a knack for writing and your flare was always appreciated by your teachers at school, then work towards achieving a degree in the English literary language. If you were always passionate about soccer, enroll yourself into an academy if you really wish to pursue it as a career and think you have what it takes to be successful in this field. Give up procrastinating and lazying up for good and for once now. You will never become independent and successful if you keep wasting your life away by simply eating, drinking and sleeping all day every day!
#3. Grab On Your Thinking Hat
It is possible that you might have a vague idea as to what you are passionate about and want to do in life, but cannot figure out the steps to achieve it. Gather information on the internet, visit career counseling or ask your close ones for help on the matter. Talk to people who might have the required knowledge on the matter or those who are pursuing their career in the same field, if possible. Grab your thinking hat and start working towards your goals and ideas that have been stocking up your brains low key for years!
#4. Feed Your Mind With Good Thoughts
And your body with good resources. Give up on your hippie lifestyle if that’s what you have been living since college till up to now! Come to your senses and think about what you actually want to pursue in life rather than just getting drunk and wasted every day! Take up meditation, yoga or exercise to feed your mind of clinical thoughts. Exercising helps you get rid of toxins from your body for good, and try to undertake a healthy lifestyle along. A fit body feeding with the required nutrients makes home for a healthy mind! Give up on all the calorie filled carb loaded junk and switch to a healthier lifestyle and see its effect on your life!

#5. Make A Plan
The ladder to success starts and proceeds after an actual plan has been drafted. To achieve something, you have to be clear on what you want to achieve. Draft a plan in your mind accordingly, gather the information and resources and start working hard to achieve it! Write your goals and each day, practise and chant them while traveling to ensure you're taking them seriously.
#6. Try To Be Independent
Try to become independent financially and emotionally, as the habit of receiving orders from your parents or elders fogs your own judgment. Once you get laid in the habit of following orders to do things, it can become a task to become self-sufficient and independent on matters relating to you and your life. Try to get your own place, pay your own bills and become responsible for your own expenses! Only this way, you’ll be able to understand the value and worth of money, which will go a long way in your life!
#7. Don’t Sit Idle
Do not take up the ‘ Eat, Sleep, Repeat’ lifestyle as this behavior is only acceptable during your weekends or when you plan to go out on a vacation. If you try to confuse this hippie lifestyle as a big part of your real life, you will never be able to seriously take things and achieve anything in your life. Get rid of bad habits such as smoking, drinking and intoxicating yourself, if you have been doing it for a long time now, and gather your life together for the good. A moving body and a working mind will help you from not falling into a pit of despair and guilt in the coming future!

#8. Surround Yourself With Successful People
Surrounding yourself with positive and successful people is as necessary as avoiding the company of people that have been complete failures all their life and have nothing good to offer for your growth in life. The effect of your company or the people you meet every day will affect your life decisions as well. Gathering around successful people will make you taste the stepping ladder of success from their point of view and their never-ending help and guidance. Asking for direction or professional help always works and must never be considered as something guilty or shy to do.
#9. Realize The Importance Of Money
Become financially independent and pay for your own expenses as this is the only way you will ever know how hard it is to earn money by working your ass off and easy to spend it. By realizing its importance, you will eventually become more determined and at least have a vision of how you want to lead your life. Stop taking money from home and see how it works out for you (baby steps)!
#10. Be Persistent And Dedicated
Once you are positive about what you want to do in life and have already made a foolproof plan to achieve it, be persistent and dedicate your efforts to achieve your end goals. Face all the hurdles with a smile and if you ever think of giving up, think about why you started.
