The ties between the two nations have always been strained, but India has yet again decided to extend a hand of friendship with the neighboring country, Pakistan. Just days after the exchange of greetings between the Prime Ministers of the two nation; Mr. Narendra Modi and Nawaz Sharif, the former has decided to release 11 Pakistani civil prisoners as a Goodwill gesture.

The civilians had long finished their term and Pakistan had sought for their release for a while. This surprising move comes just days after the death penalty was given out to Kulbhushan Jadhav, an Indian nationalist accused of being a spy. The verdict on him is still on hold.
The meeting between the two leaders took place in Astana, just before the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit. According to Indian officials, this move was purely on humanitarian grounds, and the country hopes that Pakistan would reciprocate in kind. There are 132 Indian prisoners in Pakistani jails and out of which 57 have finished their term. Pakistan has asked India to confirm their identity first.

Previously India had released two young Pakistani nationals, Ali Reza (11) and Babar (10) who had unintentionally crossed the Indian border. Their uncle Mohammed Shahzad with whom the kids crossed into India was put into custody. Whether this move will bring any improvement in the relationship between the two nations remains to be seen.

No, the frequent infiltration of terrorists and beheading of Indian army certainly calls for harsh actions and not good will gestures.
