Isn't it a dilemma to exactly know if something is a fruit or a vegetable? The same happens with lemons and limes.
What do you think, is lemon a fruit or a vegetable? Do limes have sugar? And what are some important lime health benefits?
Fruits and vegetables are both nutritional foods that are grown in farms. They are obtained from plants and trees. But depending upon which portion of a plant/ tree gets used; all the fruits and vegetables are classified into categories.
Lemon is essentially and technically classified under the category of a fruit as it has a seed inside. Any edible item that has seeds inside or outside are considered to be fruits. It can be used for both culinary as well as non-culinary purposes. Anything that doesn't have a seed and forms the other parts of a plant like leaves, stem, roots are called as vegetables. And as far as lemons are concerned, their characteristics do not support the terminology of being amongst the vegetable group.
This oval yellow fruit is a fleshy product of the plant that’s an important food in our daily routine. To be more specific, lemons come under the citrus fruit category. It has a sour and tangy flavor and is mostly not consumed directly. Citrus fruits (meaning) have rind, thick and juicy pulp and need a warm temperature to grow. These maybe sour in taste but are definitely beneficial for health.

Lemon is classified as a type of fruit because it contains seeds. In botany a fruit is a flowering plant that is derived from specific tissues of the flowers, most commonly one or more ovaries. Fruits are how plants spread seeds and as lemon contains seeds therefore it is a fruit. Vegetables are usually grouped according to the portion of the plant that is eaten such as leaves (lettuce), stem (celery), roots (carrot), tubers (potato), bulbs (onion) and flowers (broccoli) and since we cannot associate any of these portions with lemon clearly lemon is not a vegetable. Fruit is the plant's way of disseminating seeds and if a plant produces edible and attractive fruits, these seed-bearing fruits can be eaten by animals and then excreted elsewhere. You must have not seen anyone eat a raw lemon but we do use it for pickles and its juice so it makes it a comestible. It serves as a good source of vitamin C like all citrus fruits do and is typically know for its sweet citric taste. So, is lemon a fruit or vegetable? Although lemon is a fruit it has a lot of other uses as well such as its juice is used for cleaning and halved lemons are used by people as finger moisturizer while counting bills. Also halved lemon dipped in salt or baking powder is used to brighten copper cookware. Lemons become harder as they mature and they are high in fructose something most vegetable are not so lemon is definitely a fruit. Has this solved your confusion on is lemon a fruit or is lemon a vegetable?
