Being Selfish! The Good, The Bad And The Neutral

Are you selfish? If yes then how would you categorize yours selfishness - the good, the bad or neutral? As confusing as it may sound, selfishness has both the good and the bad side to it. However, we often overlook the good and neutral side and add the negative connotation to the word. But that's not true in all cases!

So, does selfishness have a good and a bad side? Well, before we explore the good reasons to be selfish, let's quickly browse through the BAD reasons why being selfish is termed as the worst trait of a human being:

#1. It Makes You Insecure

Being selfish speaks volumes of your insecurity as a person. It implies that you have limited resources and instead of sharing that among your friends and family, you want to reserve it for yourself.

#2. It Makes You Handicap

A selfish person will lack the necessary social skills that are required by an individual to progress in life. Probably that's why they climb the ladder of success at snail's pace and do not have enough people to support them.

#3. Leaves You Unhappy

Can happiness come to those who are only bothered about themselves? That's not possible. Selfish people are usually the unhappiest set of individuals who are concerned about their benefits and not participate in the happiness of others.

#4. Always Driven By Guilt

If you are a selfish person, the chances of you being driven by guilt are high. They feel they are not worthy enough and are motivated by guilt that constantly reminds them of the bad they do to others.

#5. Behave Like  A Child

Selfishness compels an individual to act in a child-like manner by putting one's personal needs over the others. It provokes the person to act like a helpless child who is driven by their wants and desires, overlooking the interest of others.

While being selfish is a bad trait, it has its positives as well. Don't believe us? Explore the GOOD side of being selfish:

#1. To Put Your Health As Priority

If health is the thing that makes you selfish, then don't worry! There's nothing wrong about putting your health on a higher pedestal. Rather, there are times when it is critical to care about yourself and put yourself before others to ensure proper care is taken.

#2. Be Selfish To Avoid Stress

If a particular situation gives you stress, it's better to be selfish and avoid the stress factor than endorsing it in your routine. Stress is bad for almost everything, and one should avoid taking the pressure.

#3. It Could Add To Your Leadership Skills

Sometimes thinking about yourself is a boon. It not only makes you perform better as a leader but even allows you to make decisions that are not driven out of generosity. This could be good for the company in some cases.

#4. Avoid Toxic People

By toxic, it implies harmful and hazardous! Individuals who are extremely rude in life should be eliminated from the system, even if you are the only ones in their life. You have to take a call for yourself and if that is being called selfish, let it be.

#5. Neutral Selfishness Is Not Bad

We have marked the differentiation between the good and the bad, but what about the neutral? Is that kind of selfishness bad? Well, not really! Since neutral selfishness does not harm anyone, in particular, it isn't considered to be bad.
