Punjab is an important state in Northern India which has been contributing on the agriculture front since long. However, with the ruling Akali-BJP combine about to finish their second term, the political calculations are being reworked.
The ruling combine and Akali Dal, in particular, have taken a strict stand on the impending SYL (Sutlej-Yamuna Link) canal issue and are threatening to defy the guidelines of Supreme Court whereby it has been directed to share the waters with Haryana.
The opposition Congress has already tendered its resignation and is looking for scoring political points on this issue.

Also, the Aam Aadmi Party led by Arvind Kejriwal is also trying to raise the drug abuse issue in Punjab to its advantage. All this is being done keeping in mind the upcoming assembly elections.
A key BJP leader, the legendary cricketer Mr. Navjot Singh Sidhu has also tendered his resignation from the party and is looking for new political grounds so that he can get a respectable position in the emerging political scenario of Punjab.
The ruling combine might face its toughest challenge in the upcoming elections as it has been in power since last ten years and people might want a change in the coming elections.
It will be interesting to observe the moves of political parties in the coming days as they prepare themselves for the poll and try to gain power in this crucial state of Northern India.
