Electronic devices and computer equipment need a means to view images and documents. For this purpose you will most likely need either an RGB or VGA cable so that you can connect a camera to a TV or to connect a computer hard drive to a monitor. VGA also known as video graphic array is an analog standard and analog television is the original television technology that uses analog signals to transmit video and audio. In contrast, a moderately weak digital signal and a very strong digital signal transmit equal picture quality. The three separate input and output connectors on an RGB cable carry the different signals for the colors red, blue and green which help come up with the right color combination from the spectrum. The information on color combinations is pre-recorded to have a table of known values from which the one screen will represent is selected. VGA was developed to create a standard interface that would be used with computers. The standard included the resolution to be used along with color, depth, interface connector, and the electrical signalling. The same standard was adopted by a lot of manufacturers and was later used by the entire computer industry. VGA is a very old standard that has been succeeded by a lot of other standards that are better in many aspects. This is even more apparent as the display interface has moved to digital with HDMI cables so while rgb is still in use today vga has lost its old touch.


Many people use the term RGB or VGA but do not even know what the acronyms stand for. While VGA stands for Video Graphics Array, RGB is simply Red, Green, Blue. The latter is the color model, mixing the three primary color in its name to create the desired color from the spectrum, whereas, the former is used to bridge the displays to the source. As you may have already guessed, RGB cables have been around for a long time, even since before the advent of the computers. RGB cables have a large number of applications. Besides their obvious use in displays, these are also used in photography and lighting.
On the other hand, VGA cables are relatively new. These were developed by IBM in order to create a standard interface to be implemented in its own lines of computers. However, even VGA cables are slowly but steadily becoming a thing of the past as we are seeing the emergence of new technology like HDMI cables that are turning everything digital. So to sum it all up, RGB is color model while VGA is vide standard. And while RGB is used in a wide array of applications, VGA is exclusively used for interfacing displays.
