Why do People Wish on Eyelashes?

While for some a fallen eyelash has no relevance, for others it is a beacon of wishes and aspiration. Blowing off fallen out eyelashes is quite a convenient and popular way to make a wish. Interestingly, the age-old wish superstition is still being followed by many around the world. While the kids are still finding the answer to do eyelash wishes come true, adults seek in the superstitious practice a sense of satisfaction.

Why Do People Wish With Eyelashes?

Apparently, the popularity of the superstition can be traced back to a 19th Century folklore. According to the lore, if a fallen eyelash is placed at the back of our hands and is blown away while secretly making a wish, it will make all our wishes come true. However, if the eyelash is not blown away in the first attempt, the wish will not be fulfilled.

Following the common folklore, people are still seen to be blowing their fallen eyelashes away in order to make wishes.

An Ancient Theory 

An ancient theory appertaining to the wishing tradition says that blowing the eyelashes away helps you in keeping the evil of the witchcraft away. Earlier, it was believed that the witches used hair to bring evil upon their targets. As a result of this, people began washing after a haircut in order to stay unidentifiable for the witches.

However, the fallen eyelashes were still a problem as people found it troublesome to fetch water for just a single hair. It was eventually figured that when you blow your eyelash, the water droplets in the air cleanse it and make the hair redundant for the Witch.

Different Ways Of Making A Wish:

#1. The Regular Way

All you need to do is to place the fallen eyelash at the back of your hand and blow it away while making a wish.

#2. Hit Your Hand

To follow this trick, you need to place your eyelash at the back of your left hand and hit it three times to make it disappear

#3. With A Friend

When you or your friend lose an eyelash, the two of you can place it between your thumbs. Now all you need to do is to press your thumbs against each other while making a wish. At the end, the person on whose thumb the eyelash is stuck will get his wishes fulfilled.
