It is a day to celebrate for R Madhavan as the veteran actor turns 47 today. However, don’t get shocked by that as for this superstar, age is just a number. There is something about those dreamy eyes that made every millennial girl crush on this man, who came from the Southern part of the country, to woo the entire nation.
Of all the great abilities that he has as an actor, the best thing about him has always been his effortless. As they say, Madhavan doesn’t have to try hard at all. All it takes for him is just that one smile to win a billion of hearts. Undoubtedly he has had a long and fruitful career in TV shows and movies, but what substantiates his aura as a human being the philanthropic work that he has been associated with.

Sea Hawks (1997)
What a lot of people don’t know about Madhavan, is the fact that he trained to join the Royal Air Force but missed out only due to some age restrictions. But, nonetheless that instilled in him a sense of discipline, and when he was offered this serial that revolved around the life of a few coastguards, Maddy was at ease in the portrayal of his character.

Rehna Hai Tere Dil Mein (2001)
R Madhavan made his debut in Hindi cinema with this movie where he got the lead role opposite Dia Mirza. Although the film in itself didn’t do well at the box office, Madhavan garnered mostly positive reviews for his performance. What sets this movie apart is also the fact, that although it bombed at the Box office, it was a huge hit when it premiered on Indian television and became an instant hit amongst the youngsters of that time. The movie has a cult following till date.

Dil Vil Pyaar Vyaar (2002)
It has always been about Madhavan’s eyes that make him some sort of an instant hero when it comes to romantic roles. In this flick, he once again played a romantic hero, a character of a house-husband and ambitious singer who is financially outshined by his wife portrayed by Namrata Shirodkar. This movie was a major hit and Madhavan was yet again praised for his performance.

Rang De Basanti (2006)
If you look at the career graph of Madhavan, you’ll notice that one thing that is more appeasing about him than his eyes and smile, is definitely his versatility as an actor. In this classic movie, Madhavan plays flight lieutenant Ajay Singh Rathod and such is the enigma of his acting skills that despite not being the lead hero, he makes the audience feel the pain of a supporting actor’s death when his character dies in a plane crash. This movie was like a message to the directors that very neatly depicted Madhavan’s versatility.

Guru (2007)
There was a time when legendary director Mani Ratnam had rejected Madhav for a serious role because he felt his eyes looked too young for a serious person. However, in 2007, the thing came a full circle when Ratnam picked up Madhavan to play the role of a journalist determined to tell the truth and expose the fraudulent means that Guru (Abhishek Bachchan) resorted to in order to expand his business. The eyes which once seemed too kiddish now seemed honest to the legendary director and this stamped his authority as a solid actor.

13B (2009)
Talking of Madhavan’s versatility, this movie was again a break from his usual image of a chocolate hero who acts in romantic movies. This movie is about the incidents that take place in Madhavan’s apartment due to some paranormal activities. In this flick, the 47-year-old masterfully displays the complexities that his character goes through as he tries to investigate and find a solution to the eerie occurrences.

3 Idiots (2009)
This perhaps is one of his most popular films where Madhavan yet again depicts his acting skills where he plays a young college student, Farhan Qureshi. Though he is not the ultimate highlight of the movie, he still managed to impress everyone with the humor and complexity his character possessed. Tanu Weds Manu (2011) and Tanu Weds Manu (2015)
These highly successful films yet again portrayed Madhavan as a romantic hero. Although the definition of romance had changed down the line as he graduated from movie 1 to 2, Madhavan effortlessly managed to pull off the character in the subtlest of ways, which was a welcome change from the creepy and over friendly romantic heroes that Bollywood is used to now. In a female-centric franchise, the veteran actor received positive reviews which yet again proved his mettle in acting.

Madhavan: The Philanthropist
Of all the awards that he might have won for his enduring and prolific career in movies and television, another prestigious award that the actor boasts of is when he was named Person of the Year by People For Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). The 47-year-old is a long-time vegetarian and is the narrator of the video “Glass Walls”, a video exposing everything that happens to animals who are raised for meat, eggs and dairy products.
