11 Common Mistakes That Every Intern Makes

Remember your internship days? Every one of us had those youthful days of internship, hopping from one job to other. These internships are a huge learning experience and our first step into the professional world.

Each one of us had our share of good and bad days as interns. Stepping into the corporate world is never a cake walk. We all made some hysterical mistakes which will never fade off our memories.

Here’s a list of the most common mistakes that every intern does:

#1 Share Too Much

Super excited about their “first” job, interns tend to get too sentimental while conversing with their fellow employees or managers. In an urge to make a lasting impression they share too much information which may or may not be of significance.

#2. Always Complaining

Once the interns understand that it isn’t going to be that easy as they assumed, everything seems to be imperfect. This makes the interns very complaining; complaining about the mean manager, the cunning HR, the printing quality or even the taste of the coffee. Everybody has some or the other issue, but always complaining about them is leaves a negative impression.

#3. Assumptions Are A Big NO-NO

Getting an internship doesn’t make you naturally smart. Yes, you definitely had some brains to get yourself the position but pretending to know everything about your job is not the right way to go about it. Interns usually assume the manner in which the task is to be done instead of confirming it with the senior authorities. This leads to serious repercussions for the managers.

#4. Lazy And Inactive

Being an intern gives you the chance to explore and realize your calling. Instead of trying to look for opportunities, interns usually procrastinate and are lazy about taking initiatives. This too leaves a bad impression on the boss.

#5. Transgressing Boundaries

Sometimes, interns do not understand their limitations and go over the heads of their immediate bosses. To build a rapport with the top authority, interns miss out on the professional chain which needs to be strictly followed. Interns do prefer emailing the CEO’s or the top bosses directly instead of reporting to their immediate managers.

#6. Lane Hopping

Internships are taken up to explore opportunities and to have a better understanding of what they are expected to do in the future. But interns are usually too excited and quite indecisive. Having the minutest chance of getting something better, they hop from one internship to another without considering the outcomes of doing so.

#7. Unpaid Internships

Unfortunately, most of the internships are unpaid or pay almost a negligible amount of stipend. Although one cannot go against the company policies, it is still advisable to look for a paid internship in case that is the only job you have. A paid internship will ensure you have some money handy for emergencies.

#8. Dress-Up

Interns are commonly quite casual about their approach to “going to work.” They do not adhere to the protocols of the company thinking that they are not permanent employees. Most interns walk to their offices wearing casual t-shirts with inappropriate patterns or slogans.

#9. Informal Communication

Communication is a very significant part while working. It should be clear, crisp and to the point. The language should be formal which the interns usually lack. They don’t understand the outcomes of sending inappropriate or informal emails.

#10. Ignoring Details

Interns are meant to be extremely careful and responsible towards the tasks assigned to them. Unable to keep up the seriousness, interns tend to ignore paying attention to details. They keep repeating the same mistakes and do not bother to rectify them.

Not used to working so much, interns take numerous leaves. They keep on taking vacation leaves for some entertainment and relaxing.
