Google, Microsoft and Facebook get notice from Supreme Court on cybercrime videos and sexual offence

Supreme Court has sought responses from Facebook and other search engines on a plea filed in the court which has sought curb on videos which show sexual offense.

Such clarification has been sought by January 9, 2017, from Google India, Yahoo India, Microsoft India and Facebook.

This has been done on an application filed by an NGO which seeks to have a place to file a complaint, in case such content comes up on social media and these websites. This was done after the NGO Prajwala submitted two video clips in which a woman was being raped by a man while the other man was filming the same.

The NGO has stated that such videos are shot and posted online and thus compromise the security of the victim and hence the websites where these are posted should be made answerable. Additional Solicitor General Mahender Singh also told the bench about the steps Government and CBI have taken to curb this practice.

Serious violations of cyber security act have been seen in such cases and it is the time that stringent action is taken to ensure that such cyber crimes are curbed and appropriate action is taken against the guilty. It will be interesting to see the reply of these websites as it will lead to some reduction in cyber crime, particularly content which is sexual in nature.
