Govt bans use of red beacon by VIPs from May 1

A privilege which was mostly seen as the ultimate status symbol, the use of red beacons on official vehicles is all set to become history from May 1. The Center Government has banned the use of the same and even the vehicles of President, Prime Minister and Chief Justice of India will not be able to sue the red beacon.

However, ambulances, fire service vehicle and army vehicles will be allowed the use of blue beacon to wade their way through the traffic. There are six different kinds of beacons in India but the red beacon is under maximum scrutiny and has been in use since the time of British rule in India.

Nitin Gadkari, the Road Transport and Highways Minister has called this decision historic and was one of the first ministers to remove the red beacon from his official car. This decision to not allow the beacon was taken in a meeting between Prime Minister and officials of Road Transport Ministry on April 15th and was announced to the cabinet on 20th April.

Many Chief Ministers including Amarinder Singh in Punjab and Yogi Adityanath in Uttar Pradesh have already removed their red beacons. However, it was Arvind Kejriwal, the Chief Minister of Delhi who set up this trend.

Yes, definitely it’s a very bold and 100% right decision. The red beacon ban announced by the Union Cabinet on Tuesday applies to the Prime Minister, President and Chief Ministers as well and only exempts emergency vehicles like ambulances and fire brigade. Every Indian is a VIP and the culture of beacons on VIP vehicles should have gone long ago, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Tuesday, hours after the red beacon ban was announced by the government.

“These symbols are out of touch with the spirit of new India,” Modi said, responding to a tweet by a follower who described as “historic” the decision to prohibit all vehicles, except emergency vehicles, from using beacons from 1 May.
