How to balance tradition and modernity in India?

“You won't be who you want to be if you don't know who you are”

“Change is the only constant in life”

~ Heraclitus, Greek Philosopher

Every once in awhile, we face this strange dilemma, wondering who we truly really are.

Are we traditionalists carrying forward the way of our forefathers? Or are we modernists who swear by every new idea & try to incorporate it in our way of life? Or are we the blended lot, who try to imbibe the best of both schools of thought, and enrich our lives?

For those who walk the tightrope, trying to balance themselves between ‘tradition’ & ‘modernity’, here are few tips that might help ease up that conundrum.

  1. Analyse tradition & modernity in every aspect. It will only be fair to decide what is best after both aspects have been evaluated.
  2. The only thing that is constant is ‘change’. Keeping that in mind, it is alright to let go of old practices or thoughts if they don’t fit in with the changing times.
  3. Also, all that is new may not be good for you. Tradition, after all, is wise beliefs & customs that have been passed on from generation to generation.
  4. Tradition & modernity are forever in conflict with each other. Conflict is essential for the most relevant idea to survive.
  5. Know what you want & where you want to go. Choose which way of life suits you.

“The world makes way for the man who knows where he is going”
