How to Be Polite

Politeness comes from within.

No one can really teach the methods of being polite. If at all anyone wants to show politeness, it has to come from themselves.

But people can be groomed to define themselves as being a polite person. It's a tag that is required in our day to day lifestyles and we all should be made aware of it. Being polite is the way of maintaining a stature that is calm and remarkable at the same time. Respecting others along with being aware of various methods of gracefulness are the phases of politeness.

No one really considers if a person is polite. But they do consider if someone is not polite. Several negative remarks are thrown upon people who show disgracefulness and lack of manner, usually in work oriented places. If at all we want to have a good impression on someone, politeness is the key to it. People judge us on our behaviour and how polite we are. How we respect their thoughts and how well we perceive them. No matter even if a person is highly qualified, some people reject them on the basis of being impolite. Therefore politeness matters a lot.

I have come across several people who seek ways to be polite, and when they don’t find ways, they simply lose their temper. Considering this, they just become something which they want to overcome. As a matter of fact, politeness can never be taught. There are ways which should be followed by individuals, but nevertheless, no one can teach of being polite. The ways to be polite are learned and have to be put forward by self. There are no specific rules as to being polite at a specific time, or being impolite at another instance. If the person well behaves and knows manner, he/she shows genuine politeness. Still, there are ways which depict the true self of being polite.

SPEAK LESS, BUT EFFICIENT - Politeness comes with honour and honour comes with respect. A polite person respects others and allows them to speak first. No doubt he/she has several thoughts lined up inside their brain, but they only speak those things that are necessary. Polite persons let the other person speak and don’t interrupt in between. They never speak abusively and always take care that they are speaking the right words. So if you want to be polite make sure you are uttering as much less as you can. But at the same time focusing on the talks that are essential. Completely avoiding the talk is not a sign of politeness. Speak, but speak that is necessary. Do not speak unnecessarily and avoid topics that are not related to the conversation.

PRAISE - Politeness comes with celebrating the success of others. Polite people always take instances where people have put their hard work and congratulate them on their success. Nevertheless, praising someone for their piece of work shows how down to earth a person can be. Therefore it is necessary to praise and congratulate people in all sorts of achievements they have made. Even if the achievements are small, taking a minute or two just to speak efficient words about their hard work makes a person feel special. Thus having an impression that the other person is polite.

GREETING - Whenever there are instances of an unplanned meet, always greet people with a smile and saying “Hello”. Even if the other person is least interested in the greeting process of yours, saying a “Hello” doesn’t really takes away your whole day. In fact, it increases the chances that the other person will feel guilty of not making the first move. So politeness is always shown by greeting others with a smile, an eye contact and a perfect gesture of good behavior. Controlling your own mood and focusing on greeting people wherever necessary is an important part of being polite.

LANGUAGE - Language is the most vital part of politeness. A polite person always uses language that is acceptable and doesn’t portray any negative meaning to the listener. Even slangs and bad meaning words are to be avoided. Respecting all kinds of people, be of any race, religion is the important part of being polite. Controlling one’s own thought about an individual and displaying positive traits gives quite an impression on the listener. Derogatory and incendiary talks should be totally avoided. Thus the listener has an impression that the talker is a polite person and comes from a respectable background.

CONTROLLED HUMOUR - Humour at times can be a sign of disgrace as it may hurt the feelings of a certain person. A polite person always has a control over the jokes he mentions and to whom he addresses. For instance, if at a funeral, a polite person should never make any kind of fun gestures as that would create a wrong impression on the person who has gone through substantial loss. There are certain boundaries of using humor to an extent. And the person who crosses the boundary is never respected. Therefore to get a polite tag we should always use humor, wherever it is necessary and be careful in choosing our words.

Although, these are some ways, there are several others ways that describe a person being polite or not. Good manners and politeness come from self and doesn't even cost a penny. Therefore maintaining politeness is a way of life that should be on our list from childhood. If we follow good manners and be polite to people around us, things go accordingly and have a positive impact on us and the people all around.
