How to deal with Frustration?

Frustration is the negative emotional feeling you get when things are not working according to you despite a constant effort from your end. There can be a lot of reasons for you to feel frustrated in life. You have to identify the causes of frustration to bring back order in your life. Once you know the exact reasons, you will be one step closer to solving your problems. Swinging a sword in the dark will not get you any success. So first try to figure out what is causing it before you try to deal with frustration. Being lost makes us block the resolution to get past the obstacle.

Lack of understanding is one of the significant causes of frustration. It could be in a particular situation or with a person. All we can conclude is that things are not going well. This is not what you planned, and you begin to freak out instead of sitting down and thinking what is causing all that. But you can solve it quickly with the correct mindset. Continuous frustration can make you depressed and stressful. You start becoming impatient about things if you do not sort this out quickly. It comes out in the form of anger and aggression on the people around us. But they definitely deserve better from us. So Let us first have a look at a few reasons for being frustrated before we go on to find how to deal with frustration.

Reasons For Frustration


Before solving the main problem, we have to figure out the causes as well. The earlier you recognize the triggers, the better chances you have of dealing with it. There can be a lot of reasons that people feel agitated. It can be internal as well as external factors that might be causing the frustration. External factors are the one that is not caused by others and beyond your control. Something as minor as stuck in traffic while you are running late to work might trigger your frustration. You cannot do anything except sit inside your car while the clock is ticking. This can ruin a person's entire day as being late to office will give their boss another chance to deduct their salary. You go home frustrated and take out all your anger at your family thinking how insensitive they are towards your life. But they do not know what you have gone through. Therefore, it is important to understand the reason for our frustration instead of being entirely out of control and then wondering what exactly happened.




There are some internal factors as well that might be giving reasons to be frustrated with your life such as incompetence to achieve personal goals. So if you have your son's birthday and some important office meeting on the same day, you cannot attend both. The feeling of failure on one end makes you frustrated. You planned on having a family dinner, but boss announced the meeting last minute. You cannot say no to both. You either have to choose or exhaust yourself by making both of them work. The options become limited, and we fail to find solutions at times.

How To Handle Frustration


#1. Avoid Having Huge Expectations

People often end up disappointing us, but you need to control your emotions if you want to deal with frustration. You cannot choose how they should behave, but you can decide how you react. The basic rule here is not having expectations from others when you know that it can make you really sad. So if your friend fails to turn up on time despite a constant reminder from your side, you need to stop putting that person in a position where they cannot come late. Try to adjust your demands accordingly if they are a close person in your life. It will make things simple for both of you.

#2. Learn To Manage Your Stress

When things are not working as per our plans, we do not know how to handle frustration. So, you need to come up with plans to yourself under challenging situations. You will be facing the same circumstances whether you do it with a smile or frown. So choose to calm yourself down by taking a deep breath whenever you are stuck in situations. This will avoid the impulsive reactions that you come out with for people around you. Start to count down from ten and imagine the negative energy going away from you with each countdown.

#3. Be With People Who Support You

Stop hanging out with people who trigger you if you want to find the solution of how to deal with frustration. You cannot remain calm being with people who make fun of your issues. It will only push you further deep into your problem. Be in the company of people who listen to your problems and support you. They will be able to help you figure out the cause and the solution of the problem. You will feel better when you have someone to listen to you and help you with the difficult times.



#4. Note Down Your Achievements

When a person is feeling frustrated, they are not able to see and reason. You would feel lost in your life assuming that you have done nothing which is often not right. So to deal with frustration, you should keep a record of all the accomplishments of your life. This way you can go through the list when you think that you have wasted away your life doing useless things. If you fail to remember these things, call someone who knows you well. They might be able to recognize your achievements and make you write them down for the future low moments.

#5. Exercise Regularly

You should start exercising to reduce stress in your life. You can go outdoors and jog or hike around natural environment. This will make you feel refreshed and full of positive energy. If you are not habitual to exercising, you should start light workouts first and then move on to full body activities. If you do not enjoy exercising, in particular, you can also choose to do meditation or yoga. It will also have the same soothing effect on your mind, body, and soul.

#6. Don't be Distracted Easily

When we face some difficult situations in our life, we cannot focus on solving it because we tend to look at the wrong things. Suppose you are trying to work on a project in which you need to use your computer to surf the Internet. Now, your computer is full of distractions. You end up surfing Facebook and some other useless websites which come up with suggestions while looking for the content of the project. You know that you will be in trouble if you do not get it done in time but you are unable to control yourself to focus. So if you are thinking of dealing with frustration, you need to stop being distracted.

#7. Handling Frustration in Friendship

Taking out all the agitation on the person we love is common when we feel frustrated after a failure. But you need to avoid doing that if you want to keep that person in your life. Do not talk to them unless you have calmed yourself down. The negative words you are going to use will be bad for your relationship with that person. They are your friend and understand you. But listening to things that they are responsible for will make them go away from you. So be honest with them about what you are frustrated about so that they can help you resolve the matter.

#8. Dealing With Sexual Frustration

We often end up feeling angry at our partners when they do things the wrong way. This anger continues even in the bedroom and we do not want to touch or kiss them anymore. Everything about your partner annoys you. If you feel sexually frustrated as your partner does not cooperate in the bed as per your needs, you need to channel that energy into something different. Maybe you can adopt a new hobby and keep yourself distracted. If that does not work for you, you can try other ways of talking to your partner and convincing them. Ask them about the reasons of their negligence and work on the problems that they share.

#9. Come Up With Multiple Solutions

When we are not able to work out the solution as we planned, we assume that we are at a dead end. But that is the main reason for your frustration. You need to come up with alternate plans to solve the problem. The more solution you come up with, the better chances you have of making things work out smoothly.
