No plans to demonetize Rs 2,000 notes: Govt

Government sources have said that there is no plan to demonetize the Rs 2000 currency note. Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju has said that any such news is rumor and the intention of the Government is to seize fake currency only.

This he said in response to a question by Congress member Madhusudan Mistry who said in Lok Sabha that there were rumors to this effect in the market. The minister further pointed that most of the fake currency was seized from Gujarat and West Bengal and they were mostly concerned about finding fake currency in operation.

Kiren also said that most of the fake currency in the market was made from low-quality paper and it was easy to judge if the currency was fake or real. The minister further assured the House that copying the currency note was not 100 percent possible as the notes had indigenous designs and many extra security features which are not easy to copy.

Reportedly, National Investigation Agency has seized Rs 2000 currency notes worth Rs 4.53 crore from Gujarat and West Bengal.

There were rumors in the market that Rs 2000 note was being demonetized and now Government has reportedly denied it strongly.
