Labour candidate Preet Gill won the Birmingham Edgbaston constituency with 24,124 votes in the UK General Election.
She is the first Sikh woman to have become the Member of Parliament, taking the place of Conservative Gisela Stuart. Gill won the majority vote by 6,917 votes defeating Conservative Caroline Squire.

The 44-year old Preet Kaur Shergill was born and raised in Edgbaston by her immigrant father who drives a bus at the Harborne depot. She did her major in Sociology and social work from the University of East London.
Similarly, Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi is the first turban-wearing MP who has won the Slough constituency.
London is a home to a large Sikh population, making 1.5% of the total population. They are mainly settled around the west of the city, predominantly inhabiting suburbs like Hayes and Southall.
This has been turning out to be a good year for Indian-origin immigrants in the West. Ireland’s new Prime Minister-elect is a gay son of an Indian immigrant, and more recently, Indian-American Raja Chari was selected as one of the Astronaut candidates by NASA.
