There is a strong negative feeling, actually disgust, against English among most of the Indians. The reason for this is that they mistakenly consider English as the language of Britishers, who rules their motherland. English cannot be considered the language of England.
Around 1200 A.D. England was not a nation at all, it was a just a land with natives scattered here and there with different dialects. France, Germany, Spain and other neighboring countries were warring against it from time to time. They left their language with their people on the land and finally when France had its victory over England, a major linguistic change was seen.
The Eastern-mid-dialect, which came first in contact with French language and other languages, emerged as a language with a defined grammar and phonetics. The English poet Geoffrey Chaucer used English for the first time in his poetry that is still readable, though only fragments of his poetry are available.
In India, English has been a friendly second language. And Hindi being such a calm and cool language, it has imbibed the terminology of English in its grammatical framework without any grudges. At present, only those who are unable to get a chance to learn English are against it.
The new generation is trying its level best to learn it as it has emerged as the global language and the language of science and technology. Hindi is used as the bridge language in most parts of India, and it is a waste of time and effort to think of bringing about a change in this regard when the world is heading forward in other fields of life.
When it comes to express one’s feelings, then Hindi or the local dialect is instinctively used. But when it comes to business or science, English is resorted to. English is the need of the head, and Hindi/dialect is desired by the heart. At present, the head is ruling the world, and so the use of English is more powerful.
