Sonipat man live-streams suicide on Facebook

District police in Sonipat in Haryana on Sunday said that a 32-year-old man hung himself from a fan and live-streamed the suicide on the Facebook page. The district SP Ashwin Shenvi said that the man scribbled the reason of his suicide on the wall before hanging himself.

This incident highlights the increasing presence of social networking sites in our life. Initially, sites as Facebook were only used for posting selfies but since the time Facebook has installed the feature of live streaming, instances of incidents as suicide has increased. The disturbing fact that young people take pride in showcasing such incidents on Facebook little realizing that they are destroying their lives only. It hardly makes any difference to other people if someone indulges in suicide on social media.

The person, in this case, was a married man and even did not bother on the hardship that his family would face due to this act of his. It is still not clear if incidents as these come in the preview of cyber crime but it is high time that the government authorities realize the complexity of the situation and come up with some stringent guidelines for websites as Facebook so that they also cooperate in controlling this madness which is taking away the lives of young people.

It is not a good sight to watch someone committ suicide while being live streamed on your Facebook feed. However, it should be noted that the person who has committed the crime here is not in existence anymore and penalising Facebook for any illegal act a person does on camera while using the live stream feature is not the right thing.Taking the extreme decision of self-murder and live streaming it to his online friends was the conscious decision of that man and it led to misuse of the live stream feature provided by Facebook. Monitored video feed is not possible on such a massive scale that are the users of the website and it would beat the whole point of live-streaming. Penalising the criminal for any act live streamed is the right thing to do, which in this case is not possible.
