What does hostel life teach us

Hostel life can be truly memorable for those who had the opportunity to experience it.

Well, for some unfortunate souls, it was never an opportunity. They just go dumped into boarding schools by their parents because of their behaviour at home or their previous schools. Of course, that is not the case with everyone who has had to stay in hostels. Our reasons vary vastly.

One thing that still holds true is that everything that we are today, is a direct result of how we were moulded in our hostels, in the formative years of our lives.

For those of you who couldn’t experience staying in hostels, and those who might get the chance to experience hostel life, we’ll share what staying in a hostel taught us.

Freedom comes at a cost

Yes, this is the first thought that comes to our mind when we think of hostels. Complete freedom from our nagging parents, irritating brothers & sisters, nosy neighbours et al.

But little do they know that hostel often has strict rules that need to be adhered to, like timings of entry & exit, the laundry time, in some case, time-slots for bathing. And of course, items of vice, that are strictly prohibited.

The art of self-discipline

They say, a couple of years in a hostel will make a man of you. The saying does hold true when you have to manage everything by yourselves. No one to wake you up, no one to clean your room, no one to do your dishes & no one to prepare your meals whenever you want (we’re all Maggi chefs). Thou shalt leave thy tantrums back home.

A date with your first vice

This may be highly subjective, but we tend to think otherwise. 8 in 10 people have had their first puff or their first drink while staying in a hostel. Having said that, there are exceptions of course. There are some people who survive the temptation & are as straight as an arrow even towards the end of their hostel stay.

You’re always out of cash

Want to go on a date? What to buy him/her a gift? Want to have a few drinks friends? Want to order in that awesome pizza tonight? Need to fill fuel in your bike? But wait, you’re out of money. Hostel life is our first-hand experience of what having a bank loan is like. For some reason or the other, you’re always out of cash & that’s where your friends step in to save the day.

The value of home cooked food

After having those meals in your hostel mess, you begin to realize the true value of your mother’s cooking when you’re away from home, residing in a hostel. After all, Maggi isn’t the answer to everything. You don’t miss an opportunity to pounce on your mate’s tiffin in case he/she has just returned from home with home-cooked food.

Because it’s all about loving your family

In spite of all the freedom to do whatever you want, there always remains a void which is only filled with your family. No matter how life in a hostel moulds you, your heart always belongs at home. Staying away from your home & family, makes you realize how important they are.

Opinion
Yes

The most important thing I've learnt is assessing people's nature. I can now proudly say I understand the difference between genuineness and deception. It's easy to  misuse your freedom when you're away from home without the watchful eyes of your parents. But I learnt to use my freedom wisely.
