What does RSVP mean?

Have you ever come across a wedding invitation ending with RSVP? Were you confused? It’s quite common to puzzle around foreign terms. RSVP has been used in wedding invitations, birthday cards, and every other invitation.

The meaning of RSVP has been debated for a long time. It is important for both guest and the host to understand the correct meaning of the term and use it wisely.

What Does RSVP Mean?

'RSVP' is the French abbreviation meaning 'Répondez s'il vous plait,' which translates to “please reply “in English. The sender uses the term at the end of the invitation because he wants to know whether you have accepted or declined the invitation. It is a part of western etiquettes to respond to an invitation letter; irrespective of what you reply. If you cannot make it to the event, then a response can reflect on your regret for not being a part of the celebrations.

It makes it easier for the hosts who are planning a wedding invitation or a lunch party to arrange for all the guests who are attending.

Is It Inconsiderate To Not Respond To RSVP?

Most written invitations have a response card that can be mailed back or has the host’s contact number. One can call and inform them of their plans, although, as per the etiquettes a written invitation demands a written response.

The term has not been able to gain as much popularity and therefore leaves the host disappointed on many occasions. Without the guest’s response, it becomes difficult for the host to figure out the accommodation plans. It is a common problem because most guests are not aware of it.

On the other hand, some guests do not RSVP because they do not wish to disappoint the host. Uncertainty could be another reason for not responding to the RSVPs. These reasons cause much of concern for the host. In the absence of an appropriate respondents list, the host is unable to make proper bookings related to sitting arrangement or food.

It is better to stay true to the host instead of causing them trouble. One can never understand the frustration of a host who hasn't received adequate RSVP’s until they become one.
