While a dense roll of bread, baked in the shape of a ring, topped with some delicious cream cheese or blueberries or eggs is the only morning motivation for some people, others swear to not even look at it. Yes, we are talking about the dreamy and super tasty bagels that make up for the perfect breakfast meal.

But are bagels good for you? Well, all we can say is that bagels are definitely not the healthiest meal to start your day with, and here’s why.

Are Bagels Bad For Your Diet?

Bagels are not inherently bad but do not even lie in the healthy foods category. Bagels lack the essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber that are required for maintaining a balanced diet. Because of the absence of fiber the carbs in bagel digest quickly and converts into sugar and eventually fats.

Are Bagels Bad For Your Teeth?

Crunchy or chewy, all the starch-based foods, are unhealthy for your teeth. Food like bagels get stuck in the teeth and gets tough for the mouth to manage them. The chewy nature of bagels causes problems for the crowns or bridges, orthodontic wiring, dentures, or even the natural teeth.

Are Bagels Bad For Weight Loss?

On an average one bagel can raise your calorie count by 350-400 units and your carbs intake by 50-60 g which is equal to almost what four slices of bread. If you wish to lose weight, then it is better rather eat a whole-grain English muffin or a whole wheat bread slice which has 5 g (at least) of fiber per serving than gorging on a bagel!

If you are a bagel fan, then make sure you work-out regularly else the fats will surely settle in your hips, thighs, and belly. Else follow these tips to enjoy a tension free bagel meal:

#1. Choose the tiniest bagel possible. Shorter the size, lesser the number of calories and carbs. Mini bagels are easily available in supermarkets and can save you from gaining about 200 extra calories every day.

#2. Try the whole-grain bagels. They have satisfactory amounts of vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Though the ‘whole grain’ tag might not necessarily be true at least, they do help in reducing the calorie count.

#3. When losing weight, do not even think about topping your bagel with cream cheese, some butter, an egg or bacon. A flavored cheese alone can add up to 35-40 calories. Instead opt for low-fat and high-protein toppers like low-fat cottage cheese, low-fat peanut butter, hummus, and egg whites with vegetables.

Resisting a hot fresh bagel for breakfast can be a tough call for many of us. It rules the grab-and-go food list, and the cream cheese toppings make it even more worth it. But Bagels have always been popular in the health market, for all the bad reasons. Here are few of them.

#1. Just a single serving of bagel can fulfill your entire day’s carbohydrates’ requirement.

#2. Most of the bagels are made of white bread, which only spikes up your blood sugar level.

#3. They lack fiber; hence the starch converts into sugar and fats easily and very quickly.

If you still cannot imagine your day without a bagel then we would suggest that you better don’t. Just reduce the quantity, slim down the toppings and add-on some protein-rich diet along with your favorite bagel.
