Google-owned Boston Dynamics that surprises the world by developing innovative robot revealed its new creation a rolling robot last month.
The rolling robot named 'Handle' is both terrifying and useful. Founder of the company Marc Raibert named it Handle because it can handle objects. The two-legged scary robot can do many new things other than running, jumping or walking. It can get down stairs, spin and leap with ease on smooth surfaces, navigate down a snowy hill, carry heavy items of around 50 kg, and move objects around a warehouse.
The handle has four legs including two wheeled legs at the end of its back which help it to roll around at speeds of around 9 mph. Like Boston Dynamics' last robots Spot and BigDog, Handle also stands upright on its four legs. If you see Handle in action you will it will remind you "Terminator riding on a hoverboard."
The 6-foot 5-inch robot that weighs about 100lbs has been designed in a simple way with a combination of hydraulic and electric actuators.
There are many similarities between Handle and Boston Dynamics' previous creations such as quadruped and biped robots as it uses the same balance and mobile manipulation principles. But the latest robot is less complicated with its 10 actuated joints, two wheeled legs, and two front legs. The wheeled legs help the robot to move efficiently on flat surfaces while using the front legs it can go almost anywhere.
The handle has several useful features which are sufficient enough replace numerous part-time worker in many warehouses and local police forces from different countries.
